Alumna Honored with Alumni Federation Medal for Distinguished
Service
Miriam Scharfman Zadek receives medal on Commencement
Day Luncheon at Columbia University
New
York, NY, June 11, 2002- Miriam Scharfman Zadek 50
was one of ten Columbia University alumni to receive the
Alumni Federation Medal for Distinguished Service at the
May 22 Commencement Day Luncheon in Low Library. The luncheon
speaker was former U.S. Senator George J. Mitchell (D-Maine),
an incoming senior fellow at the Center for International
Conflict Resolution at Columbias School for International
and Public Affairs.
Former director of social work at the Hearing and Speech
Agency of Baltimore, Zadek received her masters degree in
Social Work from Columbia in 1952 and has served on a variety
of task forces and committees advocating for the needs of
children, including the Governor's Advisory Committee for
the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. A devoted Barnard alumna,
she has worked for over 40 years with Barnard's Club of
Central Maryland, helping alumnae stay connected with each
other and to the College. Zadeks long-time commitment
to Barnard includes serving as class correspondent for Barnard
magazine, volunteer student recruiter, and Barnard alumnae
admissions representative. She and her family have established
a scholarship fund in her name for students who live within
the Colleges commuting zone, enabling them to reside
on campus.
