Barnard Alumna Honored with Alumni Federation Medal for Distinguished Service
Miriam Scharfman Zadek receives medal on Commencement Day Luncheon at Columbia University

New York, NY, June 11, 2002- Miriam Scharfman Zadek ’50 was one of ten Columbia University alumni to receive the Alumni Federation Medal for Distinguished Service at the May 22 Commencement Day Luncheon in Low Library. The luncheon speaker was former U.S. Senator George J. Mitchell (D-Maine), an incoming senior fellow at the Center for International Conflict Resolution at Columbia’s School for International and Public Affairs.

Former director of social work at the Hearing and Speech Agency of Baltimore, Zadek received her masters degree in Social Work from Columbia in 1952 and has served on a variety of task forces and committees advocating for the needs of children, including the Governor's Advisory Committee for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. A devoted Barnard alumna, she has worked for over 40 years with Barnard's Club of Central Maryland, helping alumnae stay connected with each other and to the College. Zadek’s long-time commitment to Barnard includes serving as class correspondent for Barnard magazine, volunteer student recruiter, and Barnard alumnae admissions representative. She and her family have established a scholarship fund in her name for students who live within the College’s commuting zone, enabling them to reside on campus.
