New York, NY — Barnard College shined on Tuesday evening, June 12, as over 650 alumnae and friends of the College gathered at Chelsea Piers for Spring Splendor: Barnard's 2007 Scholarship Gala & Auction. The annual event raised a record-breaking $2.1 million for financial aid, more than double the amount raised the year before.

The Gala, chaired by trustees Jolyne Caruso-FitzGerald, Merryl Tisch, and Diana Vagelos, honored Cheryl Glicker Milstein, alumna and longtime Barnard trustee, and Patricia Henderson Shimm, founder and associate director of the renowned Barnard Center for Toddler Development.

Guests in attendance included Juju Chang, who emceed the event, Annie Leibovitz, Atoosa Rubenstein, Lee Bollinger, Tom and Andi Bernstein, Matthew and Stacey Bronfman, and many enthusiastic members of the Milstein and Shimm families.

The evening began with cocktails and a silent auction, where guests were able to peruse and bid on fabulous and unique items, including an Annie Leibovitz-signed photograph of Johnny Cash and his daughter Roseanne; exciting getaways to Anguilla, London, and Puerto Rico; and an assortment of lunch and dinner parties with distinguished personalities, including Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Anna Quindlen, President Judith Shapiro, and professor and celebrated author Mary Gordon.

The highlight of the evening though was the live auction, presided over by former Sotheby's auctioneer Harmer Johnson. Coveted items included lunch for nine with alumna Joan Rivers, which sold for $5500; a guaranteed reservation for eight at the legendary Rao's, which sold for $8500; and two opportunities to name characters in Anna Quindlen's next novel that sold for $9000 each. Quindlen offered the same item last year for her novel Rise and Shine, which debuted at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list.

Milstein, a 1982 graduate of Barnard, received the Frederick A.P. Barnard Award, one of the College's highest honors. She has been a trustee of Barnard College since 1999 and has long been one of Barnard's staunchest advocates. Her tireless work on behalf of the College, including the Cheryl and Philip Milstein Scholarship Fund that she and her husband established in 1992, has left an indelible mark on the Barnard community.

Shimm received the Margaret Mead '23 Award, named after the famed cultural anthropologist, for her 20-plus years of outstanding service leading the Barnard Toddler Center. Shimm's philosophy of "learning with head and heart" has shaped the Toddler Center, an integral offering of the Barnard Psychology Department, into one of the preeminent programs of its kind.
