Summer in New York Program Begins
New York, NY-- Barnard College hosts three intensive summer programs for pre-college students to orient them to life in college and New York City. Students are able to live on the Barnard campus and learn like college students in a one-week or a five-week program, or attend the Young Women's Leadership Institute, during which young women will learn to hone their leadership skills.
In the five-week program, which runs from June 26 th to July 30 th this year, students can select from courses with topics ranging from 'Masterpieces of Western Art' to 'Psychology of Religion.' Many of the classes go on trips within in New York City to obtain more hands-on experience. One-week mini-course students select one class from a list of three: 'Blasters, Sudden Fiction, Flashes: Writing a Short Story'; 'Theatre to Go; and 'Writers in New York: Melville to Ginsberg.' Students are able to learn from outstanding faculty, engage in lively discussion, and utilize all of the state-of-the-art technology at Barnard.
From July 10 th to July 16 th , students can attend the Young Women's Leadership Institute where they will be able to apply what they learn in the classroom in a Leadership Lab project. They will work in small groups to design and execute a project that will help the community. Past projects include raising money to benefit the New York Women's Foundation, a shelter for battered women, and conducting research on water conservation and devising a plan to save water on campus.
This year the five-week program consists of a record number of 147 students, the one-week program has 47 students and the Young Women's Leadership Institute has 45 students. Students come from states nationwide, including California, Alabama, Texas, and Massachusetts. The program also attracts international students with participants from Italy, Germany, Canada and Turkey.
The students are also able to explore career opportunities to which they might not normally be exposed. Every Wednesday, students in the five-week program visit professional or community service organizations or attend on-campus seminars. In the past, students have met with professionals from organizations such as the New York Philharmonic, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Wall Street Journal , and the Harlem Restoration Project.
In addition to classes, participants can experience New York culture outside the gates of Barnard on evening and weekend excursions. These trips are led by Pre-College Program Resident Assistants, who take students to eating tours in different neighborhoods, Broadway shows, museums and even to be part of a studio audience.
