Barnard Sociology Professor Robert Smith Invited to Attend "Sending and Receiving Countries in a World of Migration" Forum in South Texas, July 12

New York, N.Y., July 10, 2002 – Known for his advocating equal treatment towards immigrants, Barnard Professor Robert Smith is taking another stand for immigrants and migrant countries. Smith, who recently testified in front of the New York City Council on May 31 in support of Resolution 67 requiring CUNY to charge the same tuition to undocumented immigrants as to New York state residents, will be attending the "Sending and Receiving Countries in a World of Migration" forum at the University of Texas PanAmerican in South Texas on July 12. Smith will be discussing with other experts methods of improving the Declaration of Rights of Migrant-Sending Countries.

The forum will address policy statements on rights and responsibilities toward the migrants from the migrant-sending countries and the receiving countries. The participants of the program will discuss and develop methods and procedures to assist all parties involved in the migration of people.

Juan Hernández, Ph.D., Presidential Advisor for Mexicans Abroad for the Mexican Government, is one of the forum’s main speakers and hopes that the forum will further clarify the issues surrounding migration. "The goal of the meeting will be to refine a Declaration of the Rights and Responsibilities of Migrant-Sending countries and to discuss a strategic plan for the international diffusion of this Declaration," said Hernández.
