President Judith Shapiro to Appear on Re-Broadcast of PBS Documentary, "If Women Ruled the World," July 28

New York, NY, July 18, 2002—New York PBS station, Thirteen/WNET, will re-broadcast the two-hour documentary "If Women Ruled the World - A Washington Dinner Party," featuring Barnard President Judith Shapiro, on Sunday, July 28, 2002, at 12:30 PM. The program originally aired in March of this year.

On June 23, 1999, President Shapiro, along with 18 other prominent female leaders from around the world, including Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, General Claudia Kennedy, Betty Friedan, Newsweek's Eleanor Clift and supermodel Alek Wek, participated in a monumental dinner party in Washington, D.C. The event took place in the historic Senate Caucus Room on Capitol Hill and was hosted by Canada's first and only female Prime Minister, the Honorable Kim Campbell.

Brought together "to take stock of women's changing role in our society – the advances made, the problems encountered – and to explore future prospects," this collection of highly accomplished women discussed the influence of a female's "distinctive approach" in her professional field. The conversation also aimed to clarify how women's empowerment is transforming both work and family lives, and why advancing women's empowerment is essential to our viability as a strong, prosperous nation.

Additionally, "If Women Ruled the World" features background profiles, expert commentary, behind-the-scenes vignettes and exclusive interviews with such instrumental women leaders as Madeleine Albright, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Liv Ullmann, Queen Noor, Martha Stewart, and Janet Reno, among others.

The program was produced by Richard Karz, an independent television documentary producer who also played a key role in the development and implementation of the Barnard Summit on Women, Leadership and Future in the fall of 2001. Karz is currently working on the production of the Barnard Summit documentary for PBS, which is scheduled to air in the late fall of 2002.
