Barnard Alumnae’s Theater Company Polybe + Seats Performs at Beckman Theatre

New York, NY – Polybe + Seats, a small theater company inspired by Gertrude Stein’s ideas and work for the theater, which features recent graduates of Barnard College, will present Careful of Eights, based on three plays by Stein, August 6-17 at the Beckman Theatre in New York City.

Polybe + Seats’ members include Production Director Stacey McMath ’01, Ej An ’03, Christine Umali ’03, Devon Harlow ’00, Catherine Wallach ’01, Miriam Felton-Dansky ’02, and Artistic Director Jessica Brater ’00, who just completed her first year teaching in the Barnard Theatre Department.

Brater’s directing work for the company includes the world premiere of Sally Oswald's Desmond or Abraham and Frances at the New York Fringe Festival, the world premiere of Oswald's Two Spent Swimmers at the Brown University Festival of New Plays, and the New York premiere at the Abingdon Theatre. In the past year, she has directed Joe Orton’s What the Butler Saw at the Minor Latham Playhouse, a reading of Desmond or Abraham and Frances featuring Ruth Maleczeh and Sharon Fogarty of Mabou Mines, and assisted on Trick Saddle at PS 122. Brater just completed her first year as an adjunct in the Barnard College Theater Department.

In Careful of Eights, Brater has constructed an original narrative from Stein’s In a Garden, Look and Long, and Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters. Brater combines the plays, written during World War II with Stein’s Lucretia Borgia.

The play includes an original score by Jason Binnick, a Williamsburg-based composer and musician who has worked on numerous theatrical and film-related projects. His band The Flesh just released an album on Kanine Records, Death Connection EP.

Careful of Eights will be performed at The Beckman Theatre at The American Theatre of Actors. Tickets are $15; $10 for students and seniors. For information and reservations call 212-714-8042 or email carefulofeights@hotmail.com
