Alumnaes Theater Company Polybe + Seats Performs
at Beckman Theatre
New York,
NY Polybe + Seats, a small theater company inspired
by Gertrude Steins ideas and work for the theater, which
features recent graduates of Barnard College, will present
Careful of Eights, based on three plays by Stein, August
6-17 at the Beckman Theatre in New York City.
Polybe + Seats members include Production Director Stacey
McMath 01, Ej An 03, Christine Umali 03,
Devon Harlow 00, Catherine Wallach 01, Miriam
Felton-Dansky 02, and Artistic Director Jessica Brater
00, who just completed her first year teaching in the
Barnard Theatre Department.
Braters directing work for the company includes the
world premiere of Sally Oswald's Desmond or Abraham and
Frances at the New York Fringe Festival, the world premiere
of Oswald's Two Spent Swimmers at the Brown University
Festival of New Plays, and the New York premiere at the Abingdon
Theatre. In the past year, she has directed Joe Ortons
What the Butler Saw at the Minor Latham Playhouse, a reading
of Desmond or Abraham and Frances featuring Ruth Maleczeh
and Sharon Fogarty of Mabou Mines, and assisted on Trick
Saddle at PS 122. Brater just completed her first year
as an adjunct in the Barnard College Theater Department.
In Careful of Eights, Brater has constructed an original
narrative from Steins In a Garden, Look and Long,
and Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters. Brater combines
the plays, written during World War II with Steins Lucretia
Borgia.
The play includes an original score by Jason Binnick, a Williamsburg-based
composer and musician who has worked on numerous theatrical
and film-related projects. His band The Flesh just
released an album on Kanine Records, Death Connection EP.
Careful of Eights will be performed at The Beckman
Theatre at The American Theatre of Actors. Tickets are $15;
