Dear
Barnard Families,
After
the terrible and extraordinary events of yesterday,
I wanted to assure you that your daughters are
safe and to tell you that our community has
come together in exceptional ways -- special
campus-wide meetings, ecumenical services, candlelight
vigils, small gatherings in our residence halls
and classrooms -- to support each other through
this trying and emotional time. I want you to
know that our counselors, faculty, deans, and
staff will continue to be available to all of
our students. Our prayers go out to all those
who have been directly affected by yesterday's
events.
We
have resumed classes today at the College to
provide a helpful structure to the day and have
asked our faculty to feel free to use their
class time in whatever ways they consider appropriate.
Although most of our students are going to class,
some are not yet prepared to do so and our faculty
will work with them regarding course expectations.
Many
students are seeking ways that they can be of
help on campus and in the neighborhood, and
we are supporting these efforts. I encourage
you to check the Barnard web site (www.Barnard.edu)
for current information on what we are doing
at the College.
I have great admiration for the ways our students
have responded to this crisis. They are strong,
generous, wonderful young women and we can take
great pride in them together.
