Barnard Names Five New Trustees

New York, NY-- Barnard College has named five new trustees, whose terms began in the spring and early June of 2005. These include: Cyndi Stivers '78 , executive vice president at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc., and the founder of TimeOut New York ; Beth C. Seidenberg, M.D. '79 , Life Sciences Executive at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KBCP) in San Francisco; Hilda Goetz Applbaum '82 , Senior Vice President of The Capital Group and President, Income Fund of America; Ronald D. Liebowitz , President of Middlebury College; and Lisa Phillips Davis '76 PA '07 , vice president and president-elect of the Alumnae Association of Barnard College (AABC). Stivers, Seidenberg, Applbaum, and Liebowitz are appointed for the Class of 2010, and Davis for the Class of 2009.

Cynthia "Cyndi" Stivers '78

Cyndi Stivers took on the position of executive vice president at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (MSLO) in the spring of 2005. At MSLO she is responsible for new business development, such as Martha Stewart Living Radio, the company's newly announced 24/7 satellite radio channel, and other strategic initiatives, as well as project coordination across all MSLO business segments. Stivers is also a contributing editor to Conde Nast Traveler and a board member of Mediabistro and the School of Visual Arts Foundation.   Stivers founded TimeOut New York (TONY) in 1995, and was named president in 1997. Nominated for a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1998, TONY won the GLAAD Media Award for Best Overall Magazine Coverage in 2000. Stivers also launched TONY Kids, Time Out Chicago , and a series of guidebooks. Previously with Premier, Self, US, and Vanity Fair , Stivers started wrigin for the New York Post and The New York Times while a student at Barnard.   Stivers has been a guest lecturer at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, at the New York University Summer Publishing Institute, and at the Stanford Professional Publishing Course. From 1997 to 2000, she was the organizer of the American Society of Magazine Editors' workshop for junior editors and was named one of five "Editors to Watch" by Columbia Journalism Review in 2000.   Board member of the Alumnae Association of Barnard College from 1997-2004, Stivers chaired the Reunion Committee from 2001 to 2004 and the Communications Committee from 1997 to 2000.   She is currently a member of the advisory board of the Barnard Bulletin .

Beth C. Seidenberg, M.D. '79

Beth Seidenberg is a member of the Life Sciences team at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), a San Francisco Bay Area venture-capital firm which has backed entrepreneurs in 450 businesses including AOL, Google and Sun Microsystems since its inception in 1972. Named one of Fortune 's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" in 2004, Seidenberg began her career in basic clinical research at the National Institutes of Health, specializing in immunology and infectious diseases. Since then, she has introduced new and innovative treatments for AIDS, asthma, arthritis, cancer, psoriasis, cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological and renal disorders.   She has brought ten groundbreaking new products to the healthcare market and has achieved over 40 regulatory approvals which have helped millions of patients and generated several billion dollars in revenue. Prior to joining KPCB, Seidenberg was Senior Vice President, Global Development, and Chief Medical Officer at Amgen, Inc., the world's largest biotechnology company, where she managed over 1,500 employees and oversaw each stage of clinical development from research to medical affairs.

Hilda Goetz Applbaum '82

Hilda Goetz Applbaum is Senior Vice President of The Capital Group and President, Income Fund of America, a part of Capital Research & Management, the research arm and subsidiary of the private mutual fund firm. Applbaum manages $50 billion in assets and is headquartered in San Francisco. In addition to her responsibilities with the Income Fund of America, Mrs. Applbaum is a Senior Vice President and portfolio counselor of the American Balanced Fund, also managed by Capital Research & Management. She has analytical and management responsibility for the global convertible security assets held with the 29 American Funds. Prior to joining The Capital Group in 1994, Applbaum was a Principal Investment Officer and Director of Equity and Fixed-Income Research for the California Public Employees Retirement System. She also managed the pension's convertible securities portfolio.

Ronald D. Liebowitz

Ronald D. Liebowitz has served as President of Middlebury College since July 2004, having previously held the positions of acting president, provost, executive vice president, dean of faculty, and professor of geography (a function that he still actively fulfills). In his over-20-year career at Middlebury, he has led major initiatives, such as the internationalization of the curriculum, which included the introduction of innovative interdisciplinary, team-taught senior seminars in international studies; the establishment of a new major in international studies; and the strengthening of the program in international politics and economics. Of the 16 presidents in Middlebury's 200-plus-year history, Liebowitz is the third to be chosen from inside the institution. Before Middlebury, Liebowitz was a visiting instructor of geography at Bucknell University and a consultant and research assistant at Columbia University. An authority on Russian economic and political geography, Liebowitz has authored scholarly articles related to Soviet and Russian regional economic policy, and is the editor of three books and the recipient of a number of national fellowships, including those from the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars and the George F. Kennan Institute. Current research includes "Fiscal Federalism in Russia," "The Nationality Question in the Russian Federation," and "Vladimir Putin: Remaking the unitary state/return to Muscovy?"

Lisa Phillips Davis '76 PA'07

Lisa Phillips Davis '76 PA '07 is president of the Alumnae Association of Barnard College (AABC). In addition, she is founding chair of Barnard Alma Maters, an alumnae affinity group for mothers. Formerly, she served as the president of the Class of 1976 and as president of the Barnard Club of Long Island.   Davis graduated from Barnard with an A.B. in French and received her M.B.A. in finance from the Stern School of Business (New York University) in 1984. Her professional experience includes 10 years in sales management and marketing at Xerox Corporation and other computer services companies. In addition to her volunteer activities for Barnard, Davis is a senior member of the Chappaqua Central School District, having served two separate terms as president of the board. She is also president of the Westchester-Putnam School Board Association and Legislative Representative, New York State School Board Association.
