A CONVERSATION WITH BARBARA HORGAN LEADS OFF THE DANCE DEPARTMENT'S MONDAY EVENING SERIES, ON DANCE

New York, NY, September 18, 2001--Barbara Horgan, personal assistant to choreographer George Balanchine for the last 20 years of his life, will kick off the Department of Dance's Monday evening series, On Dance: Conversations, Films, and Lectures, October 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Horgan, who joined the staff of the New York Ballet in 1953, founded the George Balanchine Trust in 1987 to coordinate the licensing of the choreographer's works. She will be interviewed by On Dance curator Lynn Garafola in a conversation that will focus on the sometimes controversial issues of copyright and preservation in dance.

Three weeks later on October 29, On Dance pays tribute to master costumer Barbara Matera, who had been scheduled to speak on costuming dancers for the stage, but unexpectedly died on September 13. Leading the tribute will be Holly Hynes, the New York City Ballet's Director of Costume and herself a student of Matera, whom she calls her mentor. Since receiving her Theatre Arts degree in 1978, Hynes has designed for dance, theatre, opera, and film. She has created costumes for over seventy ballets, in addition to supervising the construction, maintenance, and restoration of NYCB's huge stock of costumes. She will be joined by her assistant Carole Divet, a former NYCB dancer who is now launching her own career as a designer. This program is cosponsored by the Theatre Department, Barnard College.

Both events begin at 7:30 p.m. and will take place in the Julius S. Held Lecture Hall (304 Barnard Hall at 117th Street and Broadway).

Two additional events--Village Voice dance critic Deborah Jowitt speaking on Jerome Robbins and a program on Merce Cunningham spotlighting his longtime muse Carolyn Brown and other collaborators--will take place in February. More information on these events will follow.
