First-year Ariel Leon Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week
September
21, 2006Barnard College First-year Ariel Leon, of Bethesda,
Maryland, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week, on September
12, 2006, Ivy League Conference officials announced.
This is
the first weekly award for Columbia field hockey this season.
Leon scored
her first goal of the season in Columbias 8-1 rout of
St. Francis (Pa.). Leons goal came in the 23rd minute
of the first win of the season for Columbia. Leon, who has
started all four games of her collegiate career, was the first
freshman to score this season for the Lions. Leon was nominated
for the honor by her coach, Darlene Camacho, Assistant Director
of Athletics at Columbia University.
On receiving
the honor, Leon said "I was very surprised by the selection.
I feel that this honor was largely due to the number of wonderful
opportunities given to me by my coaches and my teammates.
As a forward, my position relies heavily on the skill and
endurance of the mid fielders and defenders who work hard
to get the ball in the attacking half."
Barnard
College is the only womens college that competes at
the NCAA Division I level. The Barnard/Columbia Athletic Consortium,
established in 1983, is a unique collaboration of Barnard
