Lizzie Simon, Author of Detour: My Bipolar Road Trip in 4-D, To Speak at Barnard College’s Rosemary Furman Counseling Center, Oct. 16

New York, NY, September 20, 2002 – Barnard’s Rosemary Furman Counseling Center will host theater producer Lizzie Simon, author of Detour: My Bipolar Road Trip in 4-D, for an evening of reading and discussion on Wednesday, October 16, 2002. The event will take place in the Held Lecture Hall, 3rd floor, Barnard Hall, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Simon will discuss her personal experiences with bipolar disorder as well as read selections from Detour, which describes her cross-country journey during which she encountered and interviewed other young people with bipolar disorder in an attempt to connect and share their stories. Regarding the years that followed her diagnosis, "Going crazy at seventeen was the most traumatic experience I have ever had, and [that] at that time I felt without role models, without resources, without road maps," Simon wrote.

Detour has met with high acclaim in both the literary and mental health fields. In reviewing Simon’s book, Peter D. Kramer, author of Listening to Prozac, writes, "Detour does for bipolar disorder what Prozac Nation did for depression - scopes it out from the viewpoint of someone who is young, hip, and vulnerable."

Dr. Alexander Glassman, Chief of Psychopharmacology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons noted, "Lizzie Simon has written the best description I have ever read of living with manic depressive disease. This book will be helpful to patients, family, and even physicians, but beyond that, it is brilliant literature."

In addition to her writing, the 23-year-old Columbia University graduate produced an MTV documentary this summer, titled "MTV True Life: I’m Bipolar." She has also won an Obie Award for her work at the Flea Theater in New York City, and has been featured in Time magazine as well as on CNN.
