Arthur
Ross Greenhouse To Be Featured in Major Celebration of New
York Architecture and Design
|

NEW YORK
Barnards Arthur Ross Greenhouse has been selected
as one of the sites to be featured in the first annual openhousenewyork
(OHNY), a major celebration of architecture and design. The
greenhouse joins more than 75 fascinating places in neighborhoods
throughout the citys five boroughs. The landmarks, which
include Gracie Mansion and St. John the Divine, will open
their doors to the public free of charge for
tours, lectures and other special events. Barnard will participate
by giving tours of Arthur Ross Greenhouse on October 11 from
10 A.M. to 4 P.M.
The Arthur Ross Greenhouse, perched atop Milbank Hall, was
designed by Carl Stein of Stein White Nelligan Architects
and dedicated in 1998, replacing the greenhouse which had
stood on the spot since 1928. Evoking the crystal palaces
of the turn of the last century, the new greenhouse features
a curved aluminum and glass shell with two pairs of research
bays branching off the central conservatory space. The greenhouse
footprint was expanded during the refurbishment, with the
central conservatory extending higher and further out towards
campus. Located along the campuss central axis, the
greenhouse crowns and complements the lovely Beaux-Arts style
of Milbank Hall. The reconfiguration also provided a central
corridor, a more accessible staircase and a small passenger
elevator to provide access for the disabled and to facilitate
transport of plants and supplies.
Measuring 3,400 square feet, with 2,100 under glass, the greenhouse
is a state-of-the-art facility maintained by the Biology Department
for the use of faculty and students throughout the College.
It houses an impressive collection of tropical and semi-tropical
plants, as well as succulents and plants grown specifically
for courses and for student and faculty research. The computerized
heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting and watering systems
allow for independent, automatic climate control of the various
greenhouse spaces.
"Barnard
is an excellent example of the unprecedented access to inspiring
and innovative places in the openhousenewyork will
provide in neighborhoods throughout the city," said Scott
Lauer, executive director of openhousenewyork. "This
event could not be timelier; with the rebuilding of lower
Manhattan, plans on the table for the 2012 Olympics, and other
major building projects around town, public awareness and
interest in architecture and design in New York has never
been greater."
OHNY was inspired by the overwhelming success of similar events
that have taken place over the past decade in London, Toronto
and other cities around the world. Through an annual citywide
event and other public programs throughout the year, OHNY
will engage the public in New Yorks rich architectural,
urban and historical development by providing access to a
diverse array of architectural, engineering and design achievements.
A guide and map highlighting all participating sites will
be available at all participating sites and at the OHNY welcome
center at the Center for Architecture. Complete event information
will also be available on OHNY website, http://www.ohny.org
