PAINTING
STUDENTS CREATE ARTWORK FOR WTC RESCUE WORKERS
New
York, NY, October 4, 2001--For the last two
weeks, students in Joan Snitzer's Painting I
class have been creating oil paintings for the
police officers and firefighters of New York
City. The paintings are a permanent form of
the hundreds of flower and candle memorials
that have sprung up across the city in the last
three weeks.
Snitzer, a Senior Lecturer of Art History, and
her 20 students delivered their paintings (wrapped
in red, white, and blue ribbons) yesterday to
Police Precinct 26, Firehouse Engine 37 Ladder
40, and an emergency services squad on 126th
Street. After some emotional discussion at each
place, the policemen and firemen decided to
give the paintings to families of those killed
in the line of duty.
The
following letter was attached to each painting:
To New York's Finest and Bravest:
The students of Barnard College and Columbia
University would like to offer this painting
as a gesture of our deep appreciation for your
tireless dedication to the safety and wellbeing
of our community and city. This painting was
made, amongst others, by a Painting I class
at Barnard College in honor of those who, in
their selfless service to others, lost their
lives on September 11, 2001 and those colleagues
who continue to risk their lives in the line
of duty.
