Lynne Tillman Kicks off Books Etc. Series with Readings of New and Recent Work

New York, N.Y.- Barnard's Books, Etc. series kicked off Tuesday, September 30 with a reading by visiting professor Lynne Tillman. Tillman, author of four novels, including the 1998 New York Times Notable Book No Lease on Life, read two new short stories and two from her most recent story collection, This is Not It.

In introducing the series, Barnard English Department chair Maire Jaanus cited the "extraordinary number of very eminent writers" who have attended Barnard. "Is it that our admissions office uncannily picks out all the great writers around the country? Or do they select us and apply here?" she asked. Barnard counts over 1,300 alumnae who have published books in the past 40 years, chronicled in the Alumnae Bibliography here. The Books Etc Series aims to raise awareness of this incredible Barnard writing community.

Tillman began her reading with the new stories "A Simple Idea" and "Chartreuse," the latter of which is scheduled to appear in the art magazine Cabinet in December. The next two were selections from This is Not It, a collection of 22 stories from the past 20 years that are inspired by or complement the work of contemporary artists like Kiki Smith and Jeff Koons.

In addition to Tillman, Barnard has four more authors scheduled to speak this fall as a part of the Books Etc. series, including Alice Walker, Jhumpa Lahiri, BC '89, Anna Quindlen, BC '74, and Ursula Hegi. Quindlin and Lahiri are Barnard alumnae, and Tillman and Hegi are visiting professors at the college this fall. Quindlin has also been a trustee of the College since 1983 and began her tenure as chair of the Board of Trustees this fall.
