Mary
Cochran, Chair of the Barnard College Dance Department,
reacts to The New York Times Sugar Salon review
Sugar
Salon is a dance project co-sponsored by Barnard through dance
department chair Mary Cochran. The inaugural Sugar Salon performance
was held at Symphony Space in New York City on October 10,
2006, and reviewed in the October 12, 2006, edition of The
New York Times. Mary Cochran, Chair of the Barnard College
Dance Department, reacts to the Sugar Salon review below:
"This review expresses support for Sugar Salon as a collaborative,
multi-faceted, cross-generational project that encourages
the creation of innovative works by women choreographers.
It is rare when The New York Times reviews a one-night-only
concert.
That said,
critics often have a difficult time understanding new work
as there is no precedent. Modern artists that we accept as
almost old hat today (Martha Graham for one) struggled to
have their vision accepted by critics and the public in the
early and even middle stages of their creative careers. It
is important to remember that great art asks questions of
the viewer. Post-post modern choreographers such as these
four women work on many levels simultaneously. One must be
an participatory observer in order to comprehend the depth
of the work. I heard many astute and positive comments from
a diverse sampling of the 400 audience members at the inaugural
performance of Sugar Salon."
