Barnard students to build 700-foot sub sandwich on Oct. 25 to dish out a mouthful of campus spirit -
Hoagie, with 1,725 lbs. of ingredients, will appeal to all eating habits

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Using close to 2,000 pounds of bread, ham, cheese and other deli staples, Barnard students plan to serve up a large bite of togetherness in celebration of Fall Fest 2000, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the form of what may be the largest sub sandwich ever built on a college campus.

The 700-foot hoagie, to be built between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., and viewed and consumed between 7-9 p.m., is designed to bring students together within the Barnard and Columbia University community. The giant sub will stretch across the campus from Milbank Hall at 119th Street to the Quad of student residences at 116th Street. The event is organized by McIntosh Activities Council (McAc), a student organization, and is catered by Barnard's Aramark Dining Services.

The sandwich will reflect the diversity of eating preferences and customs within the Barnard/Columbia student population. The giant hero will weigh 1,725 lbs. and will be composed of 75 lbs. of tuna, 100 lbs. of turkey, 420 lbs. of bread, 50 lbs. of ham and cheese each, 50 lbs. of fresh vegetables, and 350 lbs. of lettuce. It will be divided into six stations representing the diversity of eating habits: vegan, vegetarian, kosher, meat, fish, and poultry. The grinder will be foot marked every 20 feet for the various stations. Maps will be provided for the students to locate their preferred type of sandwich along the 700-ft. stretch, crossing the Barnard campus.

The sandwich will be covered and protected until the event starts. Each student will be handed a knife and a ruler to make sure they measure equal portions. Student teams serving the hero will be wearing special T-shirts with a yellow submarine, designed by the organizers. Donations for the building of the sub and for the refreshments have been provided by Pepsi, Poland Springs, Big Geyser (Nantucket Nectar), Frito Lay, Swiss Miss, and Louis Riches, a local bakery.

According to Joe Calizo, program coordinator for the College Activities Office, the event will facilitate community building in two ways: "The uniqueness of the event will get people to come and see it, eat and get together. McAc has also made great efforts to reach out to the other organizations on campus, such as community governing associations, resident assistants, and volunteers to join in the production of the program in order to make it happen."

In addition to the Fall Fest, McAc and the Student Government (SGA), together with Aramark Dining Services, sponsor two other events for the students in order to provide stress relief during the school year. The two other events include a semi-annual Midnight Breakfast and an annual Breakfast in Bed, which are both held during final exams. Breakfast in Bed features a continental breakfast accompanied by The New York Times served to each student's room in the morning on a selected weekend by the student members of SGA and McAc. Midnight Breakfast is served by the administration staff, including the president and the provost, to approximately 1,000 students during the final exam week.

According to Al Sorbera, director of the Aramark Food Services: "The submarine building is a great way for students and campus community to interact with each other. This is done by students for students. "
