OLIVE
SENIOR AND GLYN MAXWELL PRESENT POETRY AND FICTION
READING AS PART OF BARNARD'S FORUM ON MIGRATION
New
York, NY, October 25, 2001--Author Olive Senior
and poet Glyn Maxwell will read from their work
on October 29 at 6:30pm in Sulzberger Parlor
(3rd floor of Barnard Hall, 117th St. & Broadway)
as part of Barnard's Forum on Migration.
A native of Jamaica, Senior is the author of
eight books, including three collections of
short stories. The recipient of various teaching
and writer-in-residence fellowships, she is
currently on the faculty of the Humber School
for Writers at Humber College in Toronto and
is teaching Creative Writing at Barnard this
fall. Though now based in Canada, Senior's Caribbean
connections continue with her upcoming Dictionary
of Jamaican Heritage, slated for publication
later this year.
English poet Glyn Maxwell has published several
books of poetry which have garnered numerous
awards both in America and in the United Kingdom,
most notably the E.M. Forester Prize for the
American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1997.
The poetry editor of the New Republic,
he has also had several plays performed in London.
Maxwell's most recent publication is a collection
of poetry, Time's Fool.
The
Barnard Forum on Migration sponsors special
events including lectures, readings, and films
exploring issues connected to the movement of
people from one part of the world to another.
Each year, the Forum hosts distinguished writers
and academics who address a broad range of issues
relating to questions of migration and social
order.
The
Forum is supported by a bequest establishing
the Weiss International Fellowship Fund to bring
distinguished scholars in literature and the
arts to Barnard. It is organized by Caryl Phillips,
the Henry R. Luce Professor of Migration and
Social Order.
