OLIVE SENIOR AND GLYN MAXWELL PRESENT POETRY AND FICTION READING AS PART OF BARNARD'S FORUM ON MIGRATION

New York, NY, October 25, 2001--Author Olive Senior and poet Glyn Maxwell will read from their work on October 29 at 6:30pm in Sulzberger Parlor (3rd floor of Barnard Hall, 117th St. & Broadway) as part of Barnard's Forum on Migration.

A native of Jamaica, Senior is the author of eight books, including three collections of short stories. The recipient of various teaching and writer-in-residence fellowships, she is currently on the faculty of the Humber School for Writers at Humber College in Toronto and is teaching Creative Writing at Barnard this fall. Though now based in Canada, Senior's Caribbean connections continue with her upcoming Dictionary of Jamaican Heritage, slated for publication later this year.

English poet Glyn Maxwell has published several books of poetry which have garnered numerous awards both in America and in the United Kingdom, most notably the E.M. Forester Prize for the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1997. The poetry editor of the New Republic, he has also had several plays performed in London. Maxwell's most recent publication is a collection of poetry, Time's Fool.

The Barnard Forum on Migration sponsors special events including lectures, readings, and films exploring issues connected to the movement of people from one part of the world to another. Each year, the Forum hosts distinguished writers and academics who address a broad range of issues relating to questions of migration and social order.

The Forum is supported by a bequest establishing the Weiss International Fellowship Fund to bring distinguished scholars in literature and the arts to Barnard. It is organized by Caryl Phillips, the Henry R. Luce Professor of Migration and Social Order.
