Three Modern Classics and One Premiere
 |
Barnard
Dances at Miller will feature ensemble works by four major
choreographers. The program will be presented at Columbia
Universitys Miller Theatre on Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday, November 13, 14, 15 at 8 PM.
Martha Grahams Celebration (1936) is being set
by her former leading dancer, Yuriko, for a cast of 14 women.
The score by Louis Horst will be arranged by the Departments
music coordinator Gilles Obermayer.
Con Amore, created by Lew Christensen and with music
by Gioacchino Rossini, will be staged for 18 dancers by original
cast member Virginia Johnson. The work was first performed
by the San Francisco Ballet in 1953 and is about love as depicted
in 19th-century European engravings.
Eight dancers will perform Tensile Involvement (1950),
Alwin Nikolais work that shows off the choreographers
mastery of total theater in his use of costuming, lighting,
sound and objects in space. The work will be set by Alberto
Del Saz from the Murray Louis and Alwin Nikolais Dance Company.
Guest choreographer in residence Lila York is creating a new
work to two movements of Felix Mendelssohns Octet.
This premiere will be Ms. Yorks second work created
on Barnard dancers.
The Miller Theatre is located on the Columbia University campus
at 116th Street and Broadway, accessible by the 1 and 9 trains
