Columnist and Author Margaret Heffernan Discusses Women and Business November 15

Author and columnist Margaret Heffernan believes that the future of women in business depends not only on women taking greater leadership roles, but also on women fundamentally "changing the game." She explains how this might be done in her new book, "The Naked Truth: A Working Woman's Manifesto on Business and What Really Matters," which she will discuss on November 15 at 7 p.m. in Brooks Living Room.

"The Naked Truth" fuses Heffernan's own experience as a former CEO with that of hundreds of women in business to identify the biggest challenges and the best solutions that women in business face today. She also describes four career-limiting stereotypes of women at work and offers advice for breaking them down.   The book was published simultaneously in the United States and the United Kingdom in September.

Heffernan has been CEO of five different businesses (both old economy and new) in both countries. A former producer for the BBC, she has consulted for film and television and is acknowledged as one of the top industry executives by the Silicon Alley Reporter, Streaming Media, and the Hollywood Reporter.

The Times of London called her "an amusing purveyor of work wisdom" and the Toronto Globe & Mail said the book was "intelligent, tough-minded and wide-ranging that will resonate with women, touching them both emotionally and intellectually."

Heffernan speaks regularly at industry and business school conferences and has appeared on NPR's "Talk of the Nation" and "Marketplace" as well as CNN and CNBC. She is a regular contributor to Real Business and Fast Company magazines.

This event is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the Young Alumnae Committee (part of the Alumnae Association of Barnard College) and the Office of Career Development.
