COLLEGE PRESIDENTS GATHER WITH NATIONAL EDUCATION JOURNALISTS

President Judith Shapiro, left, with Nancy Carolyn Bigda, of Money magazine, at the annual National Higher Education Media Dinner.   Shapiro joined college and university presidents from across the country on Nov. 9 for this annual meeting between higher education leaders and the national media for a frank exchange on key campus issues.   President Shapiro was one of 11 presidents who met with reporters from The New York Times, Time magazine, The Economist, ABC News and other major news organizations.   Held at the Penn Club in midtown Manhattan exactly one week after Election Day, the media heard the presidents discuss the anticipated impact of a second Bush administration and relevant topics, including foreign student enrollment, freedom of speech and expression and the likely support on Capitol Hill for education initiatives.   Other topics discussed included access to higher education for low and moderate-income students; minority enrollment, the achievement gap; political divisions on campus and political activism.
