15, 2006The 20th Barnard Medieval and Renaissance Conference,
taking place Saturday, December 2, 2006, explores the realities
and representations of war and peace in the pre-modern world.
The daylong event begins with morning plenary speakers Carole
Hillenbrand of the University of Edinburgh, discussing "Jerusalem
and Jihad: 1100-1300," and Samuel Edgerton of Williams
College discussing "The Sacredness of Violence: Why Even
Artists in the Middle Ages Supported the Death Penalty."
Afternoon
breakout sessions begin at 2:00 p.m. and include such topics
as Memory and Narratives of War; Making Peace; Economy and
War; Remembering the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre; Military
History and Technology; Women and War; Soldiers; and Representations
of War, Peace, and Diplomacy
