INFORMATION
REGARDING THE NOVEMBER 12 PLANE CRASH IN NEW
YORK
A
Message to Students from President Judith Shapiro:
Dear
Barnard Students,
As
we continue to struggle with the terrible events
of September 11th, we have all been deeply shocked
and saddened once again by the tragic crash
of American Airlines flight 587, bound for the
Dominican Republic. All of us here at Barnard
send our condolences to those who have lost
loved ones, including so many in the Dominican
community. Right after learning of the crash
and of its destination, I expressed these sentiments
in a letter to the leader of the Alianza Dominicana,
Moises Perez, to let him know that he and his
community are in our hearts and prayers.
In
the immediate aftermath of the crash, all the
information we could provide was posted on our
website. We chose not to communicate with all
of you by email at that time because we did
not want to cause any panic or convey a state
of emergency. In days like these, when we all
have to worry about whether an event is an accident
or an act of terrorism, there are so many considerations
about how we communicate concerning a tragedy.
As
always, in circumstances like this one, we have
tried to reach out directly to any students
who may have been personally affected. Our counseling
service and other supports are here for you.
As we gather more information about how the
Barnard community itself has been affected by
this terrible event, we will see what other
forms of community response are appropriate.
I
want to thank you for your concern and caring
over these last months and to wish you and those
close to you some peaceful and restorative time
over the Thanksgiving break. I hope you will
take this time to be with your families and
friends and to reflect on the important work
you are doing in preparing yourselves to contribute
in so many important ways to our increasingly
complex world.
With
warm regards,
Judith
