Medieval
and Renaissance Conference at Barnard on Dec.
2 Explores Public Ritual and Performance in Multidisciplinary
Perspective
NEW
YORK, N.Y. -- The Seventeenth Annual Medieval
and Renaissance Conference will be held at Barnard
College Saturday, December 2. The focus of this
year's conference is public performance and public
ritual.
"The
importance of ritual and performance in the Medieval
and Renaissance period has previously been analyzed
by and within the individual academic disciplines
such as theater, history, politics, religion,
literature, music, dance, and art history," notes
Laurie Postlewate, lecturer in French and conference
organizer. "Our conference will bring these disciplines
together and provide a stimulating forum for comparative
examination and discussion of the myriad functions
and meanings of acts performed in the public realm
during this time."
In
addition to plenary addresses by the historian
Elizabeth A.R. Brown and the literary scholar
Stephen Orgel, professors from America's top universities
and several independent scholars will present
their work and participate in discussions during
eight different sections on varying topics.
Presentations
include the theatrics of funerals and other religious
ceremonies, the coronation process, music, and
performance and ritual in the village court. Additionally,
there will be two performances-Various Lenses
for Medieval Spectacles, and Everyman,
a play produced by four Barnard theatre classes
featuring students' work.
Enrollment
for the conference is ongoing through November
22 on a first-come, first-served basis. The conference
fee is $40, with special rates of $35 for Barnard
alumnae, $20 for senior citizens, and $5 for students.
Late registration will take place the day of the
conference in Barnard Hall, located at 117th St.
& Broadway for a fee of $50. Lunch will be served
at an additional cost of $15.
