APPOINTS ANDREW M. MANSHEL, ATTORNEY AND FORMER
GRAND CENTRAL PARTNERSHIP AND BRYANT PARK EXECUTIVE,
AS VICE PRESIDENT FOR FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION

YORK, N.Y. Following a national search,
Barnard College has named Andrew M. Manshel,
a partner in the law firm of Kalkines, Arky,
Zall & Bernstein, LLP, and a former executive
with the Bryant Park Restoration Corp., Grand
Central Partnership, Inc. and 34th Street Partnership,
Inc., the countrys largest complex of
business improvement districts, as Vice President
for Finance and Administration.
"Andys skill in real estate development
and overall management, along with his deep
knowledge of the City, will be invaluable to
Barnard as we undertake a number of projects
to enhance and expand our facilities, including
a phased renovation of our residence halls,
a master planning process, and acquisition of
housing for faculty," said Judith Shapiro,
president of Barnard.
In addition to overseeing development projects,
Manshel will be responsible for divisions employing
nearly 300 full and part-time staff in the offices
of: Administrative Computing Services, Controller,
Facilities Services, Financial Aid, Human Resources,
Office Services, Purchases and Stores, Safety
and Security, and Special Events and Summer
Programs.

team," said Manshel, who will join the
College in January. "I look forward to
helping fulfill President Shapiro's vision of
securing Barnard's position as a national leader
in liberal arts undergraduate education for
women."
Before he joined the real estate department
of Kalkines, Arky, Zall & Bernstein, Manshel
was Associate Director and Counsel for Bryant
Park Restoration Corporation, and General Counsel
and Director of Public Amenities for the Grand
Central Partnership, Inc., and 34th Street Partnership,
Inc.
During his tenure with the BIDs, Manshel was
responsible for their finance and real estate
activities, including the development of the
Bryant Park Grill and Café and the Pershing
Square Café, and the financing of their
$60 million streetscape improvement program.
Manshel was also responsible for the management
of Bryant Park, the restoration of which is
one of the Citys most visible and successful
public/private partnerships.
Manshel earned a J.D. and an MBA (with distinction)
from New York University in 1982, and a B.A.
(with honors) in Government from Oberlin College
in 1978. He has taught at NYU as an adjunct
associate professor of economics for the Stern
School of Business. He has served Oberlin in
a variety of capacities including as Chair of
the Alumni Trustee Search Committee, a member
of the executive board of the Alumni Association,
Class Agent, and admissions regional coordinator.
Active in civic life, Manshel is a board member
of the Riverside Park Fund, and the Government
Affairs Professionals. He is the co-chair of
the Streetscape Committee of the Municipal Art
Society and a member of its Law Committee. He
has served on the board of Chamber Music America
and as special counsel to the U.S. Presidents
Committee on Arts and Humanities.
Manshel
is married to Heidi Waleson, the music critic
of the Wall Street Journal, and has two
children who attend public schools in Manhattan.
Manshel succeeds Barry Kaufman, who retired
in June and is serving as a consultant to the
College. Under Kaufmans tenure the College
completed the largest facilities renovation
project in its history, upgraded its computing
systems and networks, added on-line budget reporting,
and improved hiring procedures and staff development.
Barnard College, an independent, highly selective
college for women affiliated with Columbia University
and located on Manhattans Upper West Side
at 117th Street and Broadway, has been a distinguished
leader in higher education for women since its
founding in 1889. Today, it is the most sought-after
college for women in the nation, educating young
women from nearly every state and 25 countries.
