BARNARD
RECEIVES A RECORD NUMBER OF EARLY DECISION APPLICATIONS
IN 2001
New
York, N.Y., Nov. 29, 2001 Barnard College
has received a record number of applications
for admission in its Early Decision program.
To date, the College has received 310 applications,
8.6 percent higher than last years record
of 285. In Early Decision, a student applies
early and commits to attend if admitted.
Jennifer Fondiller, Dean of Admissions at Barnard,
credits the increase to intensified outreach
by the admission staff, and continuing strong
interest in Barnards unique combination
of attributes: it is a liberal arts college
for women located in New York City and affiliated
with a large research university.
"In light of September 11, we made even
greater efforts to connect with prospective
students and their parents to impress upon them
that Barnard values itself as being a close-knit
and supportive community," Fondiller said.
Early Decision applications were up from California,
Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania;
down slightly from Florida, Illinois, Maryland,
Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas; New
York applications are running even. Interestingly,
new states from which applications were received
include: Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska,
Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, Wisconsin,
and Utah.
Because of widespread reports of delays in mail
delivery, the College has been flexible in receipt
of application credentials beyond the Nov. 15
deadline, Fondiller noted.
In addition, the applications for transfer (those
wanting to switch colleges) and visiting (those
who elect to study at Barnard for a semester)
students are also up, running at 105 compared
to 89 last year. Students admitted under these
programs will attend Barnard in spring 2002.
Meanwhile, applications in the regular decision
program are running 1-2 percent higher than
last year, Fondiller noted.
