Fine Artist and Illustrator Synthia Saint James Lectures at Barnard College

New York, NY— November 17, 2003. An internationally recognized fine artist, illustrator, and author Synthia Saint James, whose art has appeared on the covers of books of such renowned writers as Alice Walker, Terry McMillan and Iyanla Vanzant, will give a talk on book illustration at Barnard on December 11th.

The event will be held at 5 p.m. in the Sulzberger Parlor, Barnard Hal, at 117th Street and Broadway.

Saint James began her career as an artist in 1969 in New York. Since then she has created art for over 50 book covers of many renowned writers. Since 1990, she has completed over 40 commissioned art works for major organizations, corporations, and individual collections, including The United States Postal Service, which commissioned her to create the first Kwanzaa stamp in 1997, UNICEF, and The American Library Association.

Her art appears in many children's picture books currently on the market. She has authored three children's books, titled The Gifts of Kwanzaa, It's Kwanzaa Time, and Sunday, which was chosen as a Parents' Choice Silver Honor Book.

Saint James received a 1997 Coretta Scott King Honor for her illustrations in Neeny Coming, Neeny Going, and has written two books of poetry and prose; Girlfriends and Can I Touch You: Love Poems and Affirmations, as well as a multicultural cookbook Creative Fixings from the Kitchen.
