Fine
Artist and Illustrator Synthia Saint James Lectures at Barnard
College
New
York, NY November 17, 2003. An internationally recognized
fine artist, illustrator, and author Synthia Saint James,
whose art has appeared on the covers of books of such renowned
writers as Alice Walker, Terry McMillan and Iyanla Vanzant,
will give a talk on book illustration at Barnard on December
11th.
The event
will be held at 5 p.m. in the Sulzberger Parlor, Barnard Hal,
at 117th Street and Broadway.
Saint
James began her career as an artist in 1969 in New York. Since
then she has created art for over 50 book covers of many renowned
writers. Since 1990, she has completed over 40 commissioned
art works for major organizations, corporations, and individual
collections, including The United States Postal Service, which
commissioned her to create the first Kwanzaa stamp in 1997,
UNICEF, and The American Library Association.
Her art
appears in many children's picture books currently on the
market. She has authored three children's books, titled The
Gifts of Kwanzaa, It's Kwanzaa Time, and Sunday,
which was chosen as a Parents' Choice Silver Honor Book.
Saint
James received a 1997 Coretta Scott King Honor for her illustrations
in Neeny Coming, Neeny Going, and has written two books
of poetry and prose; Girlfriends and Can I Touch
You: Love Poems and Affirmations, as well as a multicultural
cookbook Creative Fixings from the Kitchen.
