Community invited to Hear Candidates to Head the Pan-African Studies Program

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- All faculty, students, and administrators at Barnard and within the University community are invited to attend a series of talks by candidates for the Directorship of the Pan African Studies Program.

    The three talks are:

    • Friday December 15, 3 p.m., Altschul Atrium, Professor Samba Gadjigo, Associate Professor of Francophone Literature at Mount Holyoke, on "Ousmane Sembene and Political Cinema."
    • Monday December 18, 3 pm, Sulzberger Parlor, Professor Laura Chrisman, Associate Professor, African-American and African Studies, Ohio State University, on "Rethinking Black Atlanticism."
    • Wednesday December 20, 3:00 pm, Altschul Atrium, Professor Sandra Greene, Associate Professor of African History, Cornell University, on "Migration Myths and Postcolonial Africa."

A reception will follow each event, giving members of the community the chance to meet each candidate.

"We hope that as many members of the Barnard community will join us in hearing this superb group of candidates," said James G. Basker, Professor of English and head of the search committee. "This appointment will complement our growing strength in migration studies, and help us provide students with the cross-cultural perspective that is an important part of a Barnard education."

Barnard's Pan-African Studies differs from other programs because it is comparative, and encompasses the African influences in the experiences of peoples of African descent throughout the world. The program includes the study of history, politics and cultures, literatures, and experiences of peoples of African origin in Africa and the African diaspora.
