Katen will receive the Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger Award, named for the alumna and civic leader, and Redstone will receive the Frederick A.P. The event will be held at the Grand Ballroom of The Waldorf=Astoria, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. and dancing to the Michael Carney Orchestra. Master of ceremonies is Anna Quindlen, author and Newsweek columnist, who is a 1974 Barnard graduate. All proceeds will benefit the Barnard College financial aid program.

Honorary chairs for the event are: Helene L. Kaplan, of counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and Eugene R. McGrath, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Consolidated Edison; both are trustees of Barnard. Dinner chairman are: John L. Furth, vice chairman, Klingenstein, Fields & Co., L.L.C., and a trustee of Barnard; Richard A. Grasso, chairman and chief executive officer, New York Stock Exchange; Steward G. Nagler, vice chairman of the Board and chief financial officer at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., and a trustee of Barnard; Alan D. Katen, who is also a member of the corporate management committee at Pfizer, has been actively involved in the launch of every new pharmaceutical product since 1975, and during the 1990s has led to the U.S. market ten innovative pharmaceuticals from Pfizer's research and development program.

Katen is on the board of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the American Bureau for Medical Advancement in China, the Columbia University School of Nursing Board of Visitors, and Women's Forum Inc. She is also a board member of the United Way Tri-State and Catalyst, and on the national board of trustees for the American Cancer Society Foundation. She is a trustee of the University of Chicago, from which she received her B.A. and M.B.A., and a board member of General Motors Corp. and the Harris Corp., a member of the International Council of JP Morgan & Co.

Redstone joined National Amusements in 1954, which he organized into one of the largest motion picture circuits with 1,300 screens. National Amusements acquired a controlling interest in New York-based Viacom in 1987, the year Redstone became chairman of Viacom's board. In January 1996, he was named chief executive officer. Viacom's operations include Blockbuster, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Spelling Television, Showtime, Simon & Schuster, 19 TV stations, and interests in several other companies.

Redstone is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a founding trustee of the American Cancer Society Foundation, and vice president of The Will Rogers Memorial Fund. He is a member of the corporation of the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Board of Overseers of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the executive board of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston. He received his B.A. and LL.B. degrees from Harvard University. During World War II, he was asked by Edwin Reischauer, then a professor of Japanese history, to join a special intelligence group whose mission was to break Japan's high-level military and diplomatic codes, work for which he received two commendations from the Military Intelligence Division.
