Barnard College and Jewish Theological Seminary Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of
The Double Degree Program
New York, N. Y. - Barnard College and the List College of the Jewish Theological Seminary
will be holding a dinner celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their Double Degree Program
on Thursday, November 2, 7:00 p.m., in the James Room at Barnard Hall, Broadway and 117th
Street.
The special guest speaker for the event is Rabbi Harold S. Kushner, the distinguished
writer and lecturer; remarks will also be made by Judith Shapiro, President of Barnard
College, and Ismar Schorsch, Chancellor of Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS).
Renowned writer Kushner is best known for his internationally acclaimed, best-selling
book, When Bad Things Happen to Good People. His other works include When All
You Ever Wanted Isn't Enough; When Children Ask About God; Who Needs God, To Life; and
How Good Do We Have To Be? He is presently the Rabbi Laureate of Temple Israel in
Natick, Massachusetts, where he has been serving for over 24 years. Kushner is currently
working on a Conservative Judaism commentary on the Torah, along with Chaim Potok, which
will be published in 2001. A Brooklyn native and graduate of Columbia University, Rabbi
Kushner was ordained at JTS in 1960 and received his doctorate in Bible there in 1972. He
has received six honorary doctorates as well as numerous religious awards and honors.
In the spring of 1979, the Double Degree Program was launched by former Chancellor of JTS,
Dr. Gershon Cohen, and former president of Barnard College, Dr. Jacquelyn Anderson
Mattfield. For the past twenty years, it has provided Barnard women an opportunity to
study at both a premier institution for Jewish studies and a prominent liberal arts
college for women. Since then, it has continued to be an integral part of the Barnard and
JTS relationship, granting young women degrees from both academic institutions.
The dinner is by invitation only.
