College Board of Trustees sets increase in total
charges at 3.2 percent for 2000-2001 academic year-
Figure is below increase of previous five years
March 7, 2000, NEW
YORK, NEW YORK - Barnard College trustees have voted
to increase total charges including tuition, room
and board and fees by 3.2 percent, slightly above
last year's increase, but below the average for
the previous five years. The Board set the total
fee to attend the College at $32,695 for 2000-2001,
compared to the current figure of $31,674. Judith
R. Shapiro, Barnard's president, noted that, "The
increase is below the average of the previous five
years of 3.4 percent and, we expect, will place
our total fee squarely in the middle range of our
peers. Meeting the goal of ensuring access to all
qualified students, we continue to meet the full,
demonstrated need of the 47 percent of our students
receiving direct grant aid from Barnard."
Barry
Kaufman, vice president for finance, said, "This
increase is sensitive to the financial pressures
on students and their families, and at the same
time contributes what is needed to cover the rising
costs of providing a superb education for our students."
Annual increases in total annual charges at Barnard
have fallen by more than half over the past 10 years,
down from 6.9 percent a decade ago in 1990-91.
Shapiro
noted that as part of the College's fiscal discipline,
rather than set the tuition and fees to meet the
budget needs, the College sets the tuition and fees
first, and then develops a final budget to meet
expected revenue. Barnard has made the following
increases in total fees over the past 10 years:
1990-91, 6.9 percent; 1991-92, 6.7 percent; 1992-93,
6.1 percent; 1993-94, 5.4 percent; 1994-95, 5.0
percent; 1995-96, 4.6 percent; 1996-97, 3.8 percent;
1997-98, 3.1 percent; 1998-99, 2.7 percent; and
1999-00, 2.9 percent.
