The Bronx Defenders

Organization Website: http://www.bronxdefenders.org/

Location: Bronx

Former Intern(s): Cindy Gao Columbia '12; Anneke Dunbar-Gronke, Columbia '12

Organization Description

The Bronx Defenders is an interdisciplinary, holistic defense organization dedicated to addressing the underlying causes and resulting consequences of involvement with the criminal and family justice systems.

The foundation of The Bronx Defenders’ collaborative approach is based upon teams composed of criminal defense and civil lawyers, social workers, investigators, and parent and client advocates who address, not just the immediate criminal or family court case, but also the host of issues that drive individuals into the system. The Bronx Defenders has gained national and international attention for advancing this holistic defense model.

Guggenheim Internship Desciption

The primary duty of the Guggenheim intern is to interview people who are accusing our clients of crimes, seeking evidence to help defend our client in court.

Other investigative duties include locating favorable defense witnesses, performing criminal background investigation, drafting and serving subpoenas, photographing and diagramming crime scenes, preparing courtroom exhibits, writing memoranda regarding investigative steps and results,  and assisting with case development.

The work is carried out in the field, at private homes, on the street, and in the Bronx community. Interns also have the opportunity to observe trials, and participate in community outreach.

This is not a desk job; interns will spend the majority of their time in the Bronx community, speaking to people about the crimes with which our clients are accused. The internship will commence with a training in each of the practice areas of the Bronx Defenders: criminal defense, family defense (parent representation), civil and immigration practice, and our policy and community organizing practice.  After this initial training, interns will be trained on the specifics and tools of investigation, and will receive an orientation to the Bronx.
