The Barnard College Architecture program combines the virtues of its small size with the large resources it has at its disposal. The studio courses that are the core of its curriculum are small, intense, and intimate, comprising a little world within the larger world of the College. But the program relies on its close relationship with the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, which has, among other amenities, the world’s most extensive architectural library. And it draws on the resources of the city itself, granting students who are interested to find it experience with leading architectural firms, and of course, an abundance of architectural marvels and mishaps to study.
A LENS ON THE WORLD
“We don’t want to sound snobbish,” Karen Fairbanks interjects as she and her colleagues reflect aloud on the program they’ve built. Fairbanks is the chair of the Barnard architecture department, which is housed at Barnard College, though it also serves Columbia College and the School of General Studies. But certain advantages that grace her department—well, they must be frankly acknowledged.
