Alyssa De Gazon is the Graduate Assistant for Student Conduct in Housing and Residence Life at the University of West Georgia, where she is also working towards her Master of Education in Professional Counseling: College Student Affairs. She is originally from the beautiful country of Trinidad & Tobago. For her undergraduate work, Alyssa earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Prior to graduate school, she pursued a gap year during which she served as Residence Life Coordinator at Oglethorpe University. During Alyssa's experience at Oglethorpe she managed a staff of ten Resident Assistants and two residential communities.
In her free time, she enjoys reading, photography, and swimming. Alyssa is a self-proclaimed “foodie” and loves both cooking and trying new restaurants. She also enjoy good conversation with lots of laughs, music, and scouting the Internet in the hopes of acquiring random knowledge that can both amuse and confuse others.
Rachel Kline is a first year Graduate Student at Clemson University where she is pursuing a Masters degree in Counselor Education with a focus on Student Affairs. Rachel also serves as a Graduate Assistant for Social Justice Education in the Center for Student Life, as well as holds an internship in the Office of Community and Ethical Standards. Most of her time is spent engaging in dialogue and supervising students.
Rachel did her undergraduate work at the University of Delaware in Interpersonal Communications and Sociology. She worked for the Office of Residence Life as a Resident Assistant, Mentor Resident Assistant, and Student Engagement Advisor. Go Blue Hens!
Rachel originally hails from the tenth original colony, New Jersey, more specifically from Succasunna which means Black Rock in Lenni-Lenape. The two things she loves most about New Jersey are the bagels and the pizza. Her spirit animal is an otter, and she loves Parks and Recreation, Pretty Little Liars, Doctor Who, Veronica Mars, and Chopped.
Travis Gibler currently serves as the Advisor to the Residence Hall Association at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. This is his first year in the College Student Personnel Master’s program at SIU, which has allowed him many phenomenal experiences. Travis is fortunate to work with motivated student leaders who live in the residential facilities on a daily basis, and he enjoys collaborating with the Residence Life staff to better the on-campus living experience for the students at SIU.
Travis grew up in Buckley, Michigan and completed his undergraduate degree in Spanish at Central Michigan University in May 2012. During his time at CMU, he was able to study abroad for six months in Buenos Aires, Argentina and take classes with Argentinian students at La Universidad de Belgrano. Travis also actively participated in the Alternative Breaks program, in which groups of students volunteered during the academic breaks at different locations in the U.S. and abroad.
Travis truly enjoys new experiences, such as travel and trying new food. Some of his favorite past times include jogging, reading, and spending time with friends. He's a huge fan of coffee, chocolate, YouTube, and movies. Travis looks forward to meeting you all at Barnard!
Adrianna Aguilar is a senior Dance and English major from San Diego, California. Adrianna has been dancing for almost 20 years and loves being in a city where there are so many ways to experience dance. She cannot wait to share this love of the city and all her favorite spots in NYC with the students who attend the Pre-College Program!
Kyara Andrade is originally from Boston, Massachusetts; specifically Roxbury. She is a rising sophomore and intends to major in Africana Studies. Kyara enjoys doing yoga, painting, and hanging out with her family. Activism and community are two important aspects of her life.
Rebecca Bass is a rising junior majoring in Dance and Economics. She performs with student-run dance groups like Columbia Ballet Collaborative and Orchesis every semester. She is also a member of a Dance Collective, a dance company founded by a fellow Barnard sophomore. In addition to working in the Office of Pre-College Programs, Rebecca also works as an office assistant in the Dance Department.
Caroline Carlson is a junior at Barnard College, majoring in American Studies and concentrating in Post-WWII Media and Culture. Since coming to Barnard, she has interned in a number of different industries, from financial companies to non-profits; most recently, however, she had the pleasure of working for the communications office of former president Bill Clinton. Caroline is passionate about writing, music, and film – you’ll likely find her doing one of the three anytime she’s not working or studying. She couldn’t be more excited to be joining the Pre-College Program family, and looks forward to getting to know her fellow staff as well as all of the talented students!
Tim Chen is a rising senior majoring in Political Science-Economics and concentrating in Philosophy at Columbia College. Tim is an enthusiastic soccer fan; his favorite team is A.C. Milan and he is sad that the players he has followed for many years either retired this summer or were sold to fund Berlusconi’s reelection campaign. With a strong interest in international relations, Tim sold his soul to Columbia International Relations Council and Association (CIRCA), formerly Columbia Model UN.
Elizabeth de Luna is a rising Barnard senior studying sociology and political science. She has professional experience in the entertainment industry and is interested in social entrepreneurship, branding, social media, and conscious consumerism.
Alexis Erdheim is a recent graduate of Barnard College where she majored in religion. She was the co-director of the Columbia/Barnard Interfaith Collective and plans on attending rabbinical school at Hebrew Union College in the next few years. Alexis is a faithful Yankees fan and has a mild obsession with South Park and Arrested Development. She is very excited to be returning to PCP for her third summer as an RI and cannot wait for Summer 2013 to begin!
Heather Floyd is a rising-sophomore at Barnard College (and PCP alum!) originally from the Greater Cincinnati area. She is a potential English major with plans to go West after college to pursue a career in television and entertainment. Most days you'll find her laughing (almost always), soaking up sun in Riverside Park with a coffee, or attempting (mostly failing) to find celebrities hanging around in the city. She loves sports and Hollywood- a diehard fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Grey's Anatomy, Beyoncé, and all things comedy. She truly believes she and Amy Poehler will be best friends...if they ever actually meet.
Alycia Gideon is a first year student who plans to major in Anthropology. Alycia spent a year abroad volunteering for Teach for India and living in New Delhi, India prior to attending Barnard. She is actively involved in CU Sewa, a coalition for Sikh students, and is the Creative Director of Culinarian magazine.
Cassie Hartnett is a rising Barnard senior studying theatre and religion. While on campus, she is an RA for first-year students, leads the Columbia Lutherans, and performs, writes or directs for various theatre groups! She hails from a tiny town on the shore of Connecticut, where she spends her breaks reading trashy novels, baking, listening to Taylor Swift, and spending time with her parents, little sister and a dog of questionable intelligence.
Zara Ilahi was born in London, but spent most of her childhood growing up in Connecticut. She loves to travel (she’s been to over 18 countries!) and really enjoys reading stories from different parts of the world. Zara came to Barnard as a History major but has switched to studying Neuroscience with plans of attending medical school. She spent the past year doing research for her thesis on how maternal antenatal distress impacts fetal neurobehavioral development and she hopes to work in obstetrics in the future.
Emily Kawai is a rising Senior majoring in History. She has just returned from studying abroad for a semester in Paris. In her spare time, Emily enjoys dancing and going to museums. This will be her second summer with Pre-College Programs and she is very excited to be returning!
Kelsey Kephart is a rising senior at Barnard, majoring in archaeology and concentrating in forensic studies. This is her third summer as a PCP office assistant and as a student tour guide (BSAR). She is also a part-time zookeeper at the Bronx zoo, working in the World of Birds.
Kavisha Khanuja is a rising senior at Barnard and majoring in Biochemistry. She is currently researching the “Regulation of Amyloid β Precursor Protein by Iron Treatment and Mir-106b Alterations” in Professor Mary Sever’s Lab. In addition to research, Kavisha is a Barnard Speaking Fellow, Barnard Student Admission Representative (BSAR), and volunteers with Health Leads.
Soyeon Kim is a rising senior studying English and Middle Eastern Cultures. She hails from Brookline, MA, although she spent the last half of her high school career in Seoul, South Korea. This summer, Soyeon will not only be serving as your Resident Intern, but will also work for an NGO at the United Nations and for a Columbia-affiliated daycare center. Please don't hesitate to take Soyeon along for an adventure - she loves reveling in all things food, biking anywhere and everywhere, and wandering through museums!
Zoe King is a rising junior at Barnard, originally from the 518 (a.k.a. Albany, NY) studying Psychology while also becoming certified in Childhood Education. When not busy with school work, Zoe loves participating in everything Delta Gamma and trying out the latest nail art trends. As a Pre-College Programs alum herself, she is eager to meet all the PCPers this summer and relive her younger years.
Isamar Lopez is from Houston, Texas. She is majoring in Dance with a concentration in Physical Therapy. She loves New York City and this will be her second year on the Pre-College Programs team as a Resident Intern. A fun fact about Isamar is that she started learning how to cook, which she is really excited about!
Hailing all the way from California, Katie Malen-Gamley came to Barnard two years ago as an excited First Year ready to explore the city. While she still has not made it out of the borough of Manhattan (embarrassing, I know), she has discovered a passion for Psychology and Art History, as well as ways to get into basically every museum for free. In addition to enjoying long walks through the High Line Park and affordable dinners at Shake Shack, she looks forward to discovering new hidden gems with the Pre-College students this summer! And if you ever need a break from your non-stop city adventures, Katie has all of Homeland on her computer and an endless supply of hummus and pretzel chips that she is always willing to share. Can't wait for Summer 2013!
Sonia Mankin is a rising sophomore at Barnard and is considering a major in Biology. Sonia is originally from Boston, but she loves exploring New York City, taking photos, and listening to music. Her favorite spots in the city are The High Line park, Chelsea Market, and Strawberry Fields in Central Park. Sonia is very excited to be a part of the Pre-College Programs team this summer!
Shaterra Overton was born and raised in Texas, but loves living in New York City and being at Barnard. Shaterra is an Economics major with a minor in Applied Mathematics and she plays the trombone in the Columbia University Marching Band. She also works in the Barnard Admissions Office and the Barnard Library, which are both wonderful jobs. Shaterra loves math more than any human being theoretically should, watches an absurd amount of television, and she can't wait to be a senior next year.
Ursula Rogers is a rising senior from Atlanta, Georgia and studies Neuroscience and Behavior at Barnard College. She teaches violin lessons at a nearby public school with Musical Mentors and sings with Bacchantae, Barnard’s official a cappella group. Ursula looks forward to working at the Substance Use Research Center at Columbia University’s School of Medicine over the summer in addition to ice cream sandwiches at Smorgasburg and picnics before Shakespeare in the Park.
Alex Strycula is a rising senior at Barnard double majoring in Theatre and American Studies. Over the past three years, she has worked with several on-campus theatre groups as a producer, writer, and assistant director. She is interested in pursuing a career in arts administration after graduation and has recently held internships with The Hartman Group, Disney-ABC Television Group, and The New Group. Originally from the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Alex participated in Barnard's Pre-College Programs before her senior year of high school and could not be more excited to be a part of the 2013 PCP team!
Mallorie Thomas is a sophomore at Barnard College and is originally from Miami, FL. Mallorie is majoring in Urban Studies with a specialization in Sociology. Her favorite on-campus activities are playing volleyball on the Club team and volunteering with Camp Kesem! Mallorie also loves scouring the city for new, tasty restaurants and exploring the different boroughs. She is looking forward to meeting all the PCP students and hopes to make their summer experience an unforgettable one!
Sara Vallancourt is a rising junior at Barnard with a double major in Religion and Psychology. At Barnard, she works as a Barnard Student Admissions Representative and is a member of the McIntosh Activities Council. In her free time, she likes watching Parks and Recreation, playing badminton, and eating at her favorite NYC restaurant, Awash. She is so excited to be a Resident Intern for Pre-College Programs and is looking forward to a great summer!
A true Jersey girl at heart, Ivy Vega spent most of her high school years cruising down the Garden State Parkway, going on midnight diner-runs (milkshakes and disco fries!), and spending summers fishing "down the shore" with her family. She is currently a rising junior majoring in Psychology and Dance and when not in class, she can either be found attending endless rehearsals for Orchesis, a dance group on campus, or daydreaming about what it would be like to be Jane Goodall (because honestly, who doesn't love monkeys?) Ivy is incredibly excited to be a Resident Intern and is ready to take NYC by storm with her PCPers!
Rising Barnard sophomore Lily Wilf loves every bit of Barnard. Raised in New Haven and schooled in Boston, she is super excited about new home in Manhattan. Lily loves jogging outdoors and volunteering at the 9/11 Memorial when she isn't busy trying to figure out how many awesome classes she can possibly take at one time. Lily is certain that equipped with a good cup of coffee and her favorite Barnard sweatshirt, she can conquer the world…or Morningside Heights, at least!
