Barnard C.I.T.Y. (Community Involved in Tutoring Youth)

Mission Statement

The mission of the Barnard College Community Involved in Tutoring Youth Program (“Barnard C.I.T.Y.”) is to encourage Barnard students to become civically engaged in the College's surrounding neighborhoods through providing underserved and at-risk middle and high school students in the Morningside Heights, Harlem, and Washington Heights communities with the after school academic support they need to thrive and succeed in school.

School and Agency Partners

For the 2012-2013 academic year, the Barnard C.I.T.Y. pilot program will operate at two partner sites:  PS/MS 165 and the Riverside Hawks Athletic/Academic Program

PS/MS 165

Barnard students will serve as after school tutors to members of the eighth grade class at PS/MS 165 (234 West 109th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam), with a focus on science and math subjects.  Tutoring sessions will take place on-site at PS/MS 165 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, beginning on October 16th.  Tutors will also assist with periodic enrichment activities for students, such as college readiness, leadership, and basic financial fluency workshops.

Students who are eligible to receive federal work study awards will be paid $10/hour.  The application deadline is Wednesday, October 3rd, at 11:59PM and the application form is available here.

Riverside Hawks

Barnard students will provide subject tutoring and homework help to Riverside Hawks AAU basketball participants in the fifth through ninth grades.  Tutoring sessions will take place at the Riverside Church, located at 490 Riverside Drive (between 120th and 122nd streets), on weekday afternoons for 90-minute sessions between 4pm and 6pm.

Students who are interested in serving as volunteer tutors for this program must complete an application form available here and an interview with the Education Director of the Riverside Hawks.  The application deadline for the Fall 2012 program is Friday, September 14th, at 4pm and the program will begin on Monday, September 24th.
