2. Update: Committee meeting on 7/6/06 with Valerie Fletcher of Adaptive Environments (Susan Quinby):

  • Recommended that the Committee meet three times per academic year (fall, spring and summer)
  • Summarized last meeting on 7/6/06 with Valerie Fletcher from Adaptive Environments: presentation on Universal Design and discussion re: Nexus accessibility
  • SQ outlined steps taken since last meeting: accessibility information on Nexus website; signage development; outreach to access consultant, Andrea Haenlin-Mott, Cornell University ADA Coordinator of Facilities, to review Nexus plans for accessibility; SQ and Julio Vazquez meet on weekly basis to discuss access concerns
  • Reviewed contents of packet

3. Report and next steps: Nexus accessibility review by Andrea Haenlin-Mott of Cornell University (Julio Vazquez)

  • JV reported that Nexus is ADA compliant
  • Overall accessibility rated better than average with some areas of concern
    • counter heights
    • furniture location (keeping open pathways)
    • assistive listening in event spaces
    • high contrast signage
    • life safety considerations

4. New program: Access Advocates (Susan Quinby)

  • SQ discussed Access Advocates where each Committee member will be responsible for access review in their building location, using Accessibility Checklist developed by Harvard
  • Jean McCurry suggested that Committee survey campus access while using disposable cameras
  • Committee will conduct initial review of Elliot Hall prior to campus-wide review

5. New Business:

  • Jean McCurry suggested inviting someone from Purchasing onto the Committee
  • Julio Vazquez announced that the Link will now have an automatic opener on the east/west doors to the link on the Claremont Avenue side
