Ten quick ways to provide equal access in admissions for students with disabilities

1.        Understand the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 regarding disabled students in general, and students with learning disabilities/ADD in particular.

2.        When speaking with prospective students about special or significant programs or offerings at Barnard, mention the program for students with disabilities to all students. Disability is one aspect of diversity!

3.        Refer students and parents to ODS services brochures: What ODS Can Do For You; Assisting Students with Temporary Disabilities;                       A Parent Guide to Disability Services; University-Wide Disability Services; What We’ve Learned: Thoughts on Disability from Graduating Seniors to Entering Students at Barnard; A Guide to Disability and Program Planning.

4.        Make sure students with disabilities are clear about Barnard's academic requirements (e.g. foreign language, lab science, quantitative reasoning, physical education) and possible modifications, not exemptions.

5.        Campus tours should include info re: ODS and BC wheelchair accessibility.  "No-step" tours should be offered routinely to all visitors or made available on request.

6.        If a student with a disability self-identifies, remember to:

Ø      inform ODS so we can keep statistics on disabled students who show interest in Barnard

Ø      encourage student to come to ODS in 105 Hewitt; please call ODS in advance @ 4/4634

Ø      tell student that a peer meeting with a current student with a similar disability can be arranged through ODS via our E-Mentors Program

7.        Have disability-related and ODS information/resources readily available in the Admissions Office.

8.        Make sure all admissions public relations materials (viewbooks, catalogs, slide presentations) include students with visible disabilities.

9.        Be aware of specialized financial aid opportunities for students with disabilities, e.g. Marsteller Internship Program.
