III. 2. What is the role of the LD
Coordinator?
The job is many faceted. Here are a few
of the responsibilities:
-
Meet with students who feel that they may have a learning disability (LD) and with the
help of an informal questionnaire I've developed, help them to focus on the important
issues associated with an LD. In addition, I may offer handouts and articles which
describe the types of learning disabilities. If a student decides to proceed with testing,
ODS will give her a copy of our
"ODS
Referrals List for LD/ADD
Testing" as well as our policy statement on
"Documentation of a Learning Disability/Attention Deficit Disorder" . After a student
is tested, I will review her psycho educational evaluation with her and discuss any
interpretation questions. If a specific learning disability is diagnosed and the student
decides to register with ODS, an individualized accommodation plan will be developed based
on an analysis of the student's strengths and weaknesses. Services may include classroom
and/or test accommodations, registration with Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic
(RFB&D), or specific LD
support such as coaching and work on learning strategies. Throughout this process, the
goal is to advance the student's level of self-advocacy.
-
Serve as a liaison between LD students and faculty members, advisors and deans
regarding disability-related needs and reasonable accommodations to meet these needs.
-
Provide LD-related technical assistance through the development of seminars and
workshops for the campus community, including the Office of Career Development, HEOP, the Step/Liberty Programs,
Residential
Life and the Writing Center.
-
Be available for both individual meetings
and group workshops. The coordinator's schedule is posted in ODS
every week or can be obtained by calling ODS at (212) 854-4634.

III. ODS "101"
- If I
have an LD, what kind of support does ODS offer?
-
What is the role of the LD
Coordinator?
- What
additional resources are available to LD students at Barnard?
-
I know that ODS has an Early Self-Identification Policy, but shouldn't I wait until after
midterms to see if I need accommodations?
-
I'm
a high school guidance counselor and would like information
regarding recommendations and options for students with learning
disabilities and some specific insight into Barnard policies.
-
Help! Half of
the semester is finished and I'm feeling overwhelmed about what I have to accomplish
before finals. What should I do?
- I've just
been accepted to Barnard, and I have a learning disability.
What's the procedure for receiving accommodations for my disability?
