Welcome to all of our newest
members of the Barnard community -- and welcome back to all of our
returning students as well! We hope that everyone has had a spirited
summer and that this will be an exciting and productive year for all.
Roberta Lupert, Frank Ammirata and I (Susan Quinby) are here to assist
you with any disability-related needs this semester -- so please stop by
ODS in 105 Hewitt during our regular office hours Monday-Friday,
10am-4:30pm.
New students:
Time to register with ODS
If you have received our 'Welcome to Barnard' letter during the summer
-- and/or are receiving this email, please call Frank at 212/854-4634 to make
an appointment to register for ODS support services. Registration
involves sitting down and completing some basic paperwork with either
Roberta (all LD and ADD students) or Susan (all others) -- and is
recommended as a type of "insurance policy" or disability safety net
even if you don't necessarily anticipate needing any classroom or test
accommodations this fall. Be pro-active vs. reactive!
Returning students: Time to
check-in As returning students know, we ask each of you to schedule a
brief (15-20 minute) check-in meeting with either Susan or Roberta so we
can go over your program and discuss any disability-related needs you
may have. Although both disabled and nondisabled students are usually
best served by their academic advisers during the course-selection
process, we are happy to see students at any time for advice and
consultation!
Test Accommodations Forms (TAFs)
Any student who will be requesting disability-related test
accommodations this term must complete a TAF for each course in which
she'll be using accommodations. As in the past, students should complete
the TAF cover sheet and then schedule a TAF meeting with either Roberta
or Susan for discussion and the disability certification statement and
ODS signature. The deadline for FA'04 TAFs is Friday, October 1 -- so
please plan ahead!
Marsteller Career Internships
October 1 is also the deadline for applications for the fall competition
in the Marsteller Career Internship Program. All students registered
with ODS are eligible to apply for a Marsteller grant, and applications
and info are available in both ODS and in Career Development (OCD) in 11
Milbank. Named in honor of Julie V. Marsteller, the founder of ODS and a
Barnard alum with muscular dystrophy, the program offers grants of up to
$2500 for internships which are 8-10 weeks in duration in fall, spring
or summer. In late September, ODS and OCD will host a panel of previous
Marsteller recipients for students to obtain additional info re:
disability and the workplace. Please watch your email for
date/time/location.
Body Talk Group
ODS and The Furman Counseling Center invite all students with chronic
illness to join "Body Talk". Body Talk meets meets Mondays from
12noon-1:00pm; please call the Counseling Center at 4/2902 to set up a
meeting for more information. One of the hardest things about living
with a chronic illness is the sense of isolation it creates. During this
group students exchange stories, advice and strategies that reduce the
feelings of isolation. It provides a confidential and supportive forum
to talk about the logistics, decisions and emotions that accompany
having a chronic illness. For the purpose of this group, chronic illness
is defined as any illness (both psychiatric and medical) that presents
physical and/or emotional challenges on a daily basis. Group
leaders: Leah Doyle, Ph.D. & Hilary Cooper, M.S.

Program planning and disability-related needs
Now that the program filing deadline of 11/22 is past, please be
thinking about any disability-related needs you may have for the SP'05
semester: obtaining an advance reading list for those of you who use
alternative media/books on tape; making sure that all of your classes
are in wheelchair-accessible locations for students with mobility
impairments and/or chronic illnesses; introducing yourself via email to
prospective faculty re: any disability-related needs.
End-of-semester check-ins
We invite all ODS-registered students to schedule a brief (15-20
minute) check-in with either Roberta Lupert (all LD and ADD students) or
Susan Quinby (all others) to discuss and de-brief on how the semester
went. This is a great opportunity to review both what worked and what
didn't -- and plan for a productive spring semester!
Study abroad and disability
If you are planning on participating in a study abroad experience this
coming spring, don't forget to plan for any disability-related needs you
may have by making an appointment with Susan Quinby as soon as possible.
If you have any specialized housing needs, it is also important that
your proxy is aware of them in advance.
Final exams: test accommodations alert
If you have a Test Accommodations Form (TAF) on file this semester
please make sure to check-in with Frank re: your disability-related
needs during finals week. As is the case during the semester, students
are expected to take their exams with the rest of the class. If you need
for ODS to proctor an exam, please make arrangements ASAP as space in
Hewitt is quite limited!

February 2005
The program filing deadline of 1/28 has passed and the semester is now
in full swing – so we hope you’ve selected some challenging and
thought-provoking classes this term. If you need to make any schedule
changes, please remember that the DROP DEADLINE is Tuesday, February 22.
1) Check-ins and TAFs
If you haven’t already done so, please schedule a brief check-in with
either Roberta Lupert (LD/ADD students) or Susan Quinby (all others) to
discuss any disability-related concerns and/or accommodations needed
this term. Although the original TAF (Test Accommodations Form) deadline
was 2/11, there will be a mini-extension until this Friday 2/18. Please
note that a TAF should be completed NOW – even if your only test
is a final exam later in the semester. Please refer to the Master
University Exam Schedule to obtain final exam dates if your professor
has not yet provided you with them.

4PM IN ODS. Thanks! THE ROOM SELECTION GUIDE FOR HOUSING 2005 IS NOW
ONLINE – http://www.barnard.edu/reslife/current/index.html
Please remember that specialized housing is applied for on an annual

re-apply as all requests are handled on a case-by-case basis. All ODS
students are encouraged to go through the regular lottery/room selection
process whenever possible.
3) Marsteller Career Internship Program
ODS and Career Development (OCD) co-sponsor this funded internship where
grants of up to $2500 are offered to students with disabilities in fall,
spring, and summer grant competitions. The deadline for applications was
2/11 (and extended to 2/18) and applications can be obtained in OCD in
11 Milbank. This is a terrific opportunity to pursue a field of
endeavor—and get paid for your efforts. If you would like to speak to a
former or current Marsteller intern, please stop by ODS in 105 Hewitt
and we’ll put you in touch!
4) Body Talk: a group for students living with pain, illness or
disability
Do you have a chronic illness? Have you been coping with illness,
medications, doctors, pain or disability? This weekly group coordinated
by the Furman Counseling Center – and initiated by ODS alum Becca
Mueller ’03 – offers students a comfortable place to share and discuss
their experiences with chronic illness. If interested, please contact
Hilary Cooper @ 4/2092 to schedule an initial information meeting. Body
Talk meets on Mondays from 12 noon-1pm in the Furman Conference Room.
5) Assistive Technology Survey
All ODS students will be receiving a brief feedback form via email re:
their current use and future needs re: assistive technology. Have you
been wanting to learn how to use Dragon, the voice-activated software
for students with fine-motor control issues or learning disabilities?
Watch for your online survey this week and please give us your thoughts
and ideas on how ODS and Academic Technologies (AT) @ Barnard can
respond to your needs.

One more week of classes

beginning on Friday, May 6th. Congratulations to our seniors who are
completing or have completed their senior theses! From all of us in ODS,

Good luck on your remaining work for this term - and best wishes for a
productive and fun-filled summer!

This is the last call for any test accommodations needed for this
semester's final exams. By now, you should have been in contact with
Frank Ammirata about any finals test-taking needs - even if you won't be
needing an ODS proctor. (As our own "insurance policy", we like to have
confirmation that your needs are being met in the regular classroom -
just in case there are any unanticipated problems and/or last-minute
changes). The deadline for any test accommodations is this Friday, April
29th at 4pm in ODS. Thank you!
Senior Celebration Dinner: 5/4/05
By now, each of you should have received both campus mail (paper copy)
and email invitations to our annual Celebration Dinner and Career Panel

DARA: Disability Access Recognition Awards

past year - either fall or spring semesters. The DARA nomination form is
now available in hard copy in ODS in 105 Hewitt, or online @
http://www.barnard.edu/ods/forms/7_dara_hc.html . Think about who has
been of great help and support to you and please consider nominating
them for a DARA this spring. This is a terrific way to honor and
recognize those individuals who have made a difference to you, and to
the issue of diversity at Barnard and Columbia.
Senior Exit Interviews and End-of Year Check-Outs
We invite all graduating seniors to schedule a final senior exit
interview during the next two weeks either with Roberta (all LD and ADD
students) or Susan (all others). This 15-20 minute brief appointment
will enable us to evaluate our services, plan for future services and
assist you with any post-Barnard disability-related needs you may have
re: graduate school and the workplace. All non-graduating ODS students
are also encouraged to set up an end-of-year check-out meeting
(especially first-years) so that we can review the past year's needs and
plan for the coming academic year. We look forward to meeting with
everyone.
Equipment Reminder:
If you have borrowed any ODS equipment during the semester, please
remember to bring it back as soon as you are able to do so. All
