Assessing what you have
What kind of insurance coverage
do you — and/or your parents – currently have? Chances are that if you have a
chronic illness you are already well acquainted with your current coverage. The
most important question now is to ask how long the coverage will last and what
sorts of restrictions may come with continuing coverage – usually with respect
to age and/or full-time student status. Questions to ask include:
*Has your coverage been adequate in meeting your disability-related needs?
*If you move outside the New York metropolitan area, will your coverage follow
and how will you research/locate necessary clinicians and services?
*If you’ll be attending graduate school, have you researched student health
insurance coverage offered by your new school? Have you checked with the
school’s disability services office re: options and recommendations?
*If you’ll be working, have you evaluated the company’s overall benefits and
health care package – preferably well in advance of a job interview or offer?
