Introduction

*Have you recently broken a leg and now are on crutches—wondering what is the most accessible route to a Barnard or Columbia classroom?

*Did an illness of more than two weeks’ duration leave you exhausted, overwhelmed, and in need of a realistic time management plan for completing outstanding work?

*Are you unable to take notes, or sit comfortably in class because of recent surgery or some type of accident?

Although the Office of Disability Services (ODS) works primarily with students with permanent or ongoing disabilities (see brochure: What ODS Can Do for You), ODS also serves students with a wide variety of temporary disabilities due to accident, illness, hospitalization/ surgery, or other situations.

Although students with temporary disabilities are most often referred to ODS via the Barnard Student Health Service in Lower Level Brooks (4/2091), students may make self-referrals and/or stop into ODS in 105 Hewitt at any time. In addition, students who anticipate being away from campus because of a scheduled surgery or hospitalization may find it helpful to register with ODS as a type of "insurance policy" in order to prepare plans for potential assistance which may be needed upon their return to campus.
