Everything you always wanted to know about LD ... but were afraid to ask!

O.K. - so you’ve been evaluated, and now you’ve been diagnosed as LD.  What does that really mean? Surprisingly, you may find out that understanding your strengths and weaknesses may be the best thing that ever happened to you!

Caffeine, Nicotine and Alcohol:
are they your three basic food groups?

When learning is what you’re doing on a daily basis, learning problems can get you down. Stress management- from an ODS stress ball to watching "Jeopardy" to the Health Services Stress Management Course to substance abuse—will be discussed.

Time is on your side

By Sunday evening, do you realize the only thing you’ve accomplished all weekend is organizing your bathroom shelf? Help is on the way!  You, too, can be more effective in managing your time and your life!

To thine own self be true

What works for you in the workplace and what doesn’t? Does your ideal supervisor behave like Ivan the Terrible...or is Mother Theresa your concept of good managerial style? This workshop is not for graduating seniors only. Dialogue and discussion with useful strategies applicable to all work settings including internship selection, part-time jobs both on- and off-campus, and how your LD may or may not affect your consideration and choices. Alumnae guest speakers!

Studying is not a 4 letter word

This workshop is offered as an adjunct to "Barnard Success: No BS." Learn a variety of ways to get the most out of studying, notetaking, reading and test taking.

Gymnasts aren’t the only ones who need coaching --or Bela Karoli and You

Do you critique your own work? Who do you go to when you need a "fresh pair of eyes" or feedback on a project or paper? Tips and ideas on selecting and finding your "internal" and "external" coach will be offered in this interactive workshop.

The "Right" Writing Strategies

As another part of the Disability Services/Writing Center Project initiated in Spring 1996, this workshop will offer help on getting ideas to materialize, organization, grammatical rules and useful spelling techniques. Help is on the way - but you have to meet it halfway at this writing workshop!

504 and the ADA:
Rights and Responsibilities of LD students at Barnard and beyond

Do you know what "reasonable accommodation" is under Section 504? What does "academic requirements must be modified on a case-by-case basis" mean, and how does it relate to Barnard’s policy on foreign language and learning disability? What does the ADA say about LD in the workplace? A must workshop for all LD students -- especially graduating seniors!

Technology and You:
A user-friendly guide to e-mail, voice mail and LD specific aides and equipment

Have you ever used a Franklin Speller...in Spanish? Do you know that ODS has a laptop computer for student loan? Would you like to learn a student friendly typing program on the computer? Would a talking calculator have helped you in a recent math or science course? What is an RFBD book and how do you use those yellow LBPH book players? Come join us for a guide to LD-supportive technology to make your life a bit easier!
