Columbia University

The Office of Disability Services (ODS) empowers students with disabilities to realize their academic and personal potential by facilitating equal access and coordinating accommodations and services for eligible students. This approach is consistent with the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act and emphasizes student ability and independence.

ODS deeply values the input of Columbia’s faculty in its effort to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to University curricula. In particular, ODS relies on faculty’s guidance in striking the balance between accommodating students with disabilities and preserving academic standards.

Registration: Students seeking accommodations or services from ODS are required to register with the office. The registration process includes the following three steps: students submit Application for Accommodations and Services; provide documentation of disability verifying accommodations needs and current disability status; and attend ODS orientation.

Faculty Notification: Each semester, undergraduate students are required to present ODS Accommodation Letters to each of their professors. These letters include ODS’ recommendations for accommodations for the student and require professor’s agreement. Faculty are notified of graduate students’ accommodations needs through an ODS liaison.

Complete information about ODS programs and services is available online at www.health.columbia.edu, including current detailed descriptions of our procedures for note-taking and exam accommodations, frequently asked questions, and upcoming seminars.
