Flu season is fast aproaching. To protect yourself and our community, we would like to encourage the following preventative measures.
Most importantly, GET THE FLU VACCINE! This is still the strongest preventative measure against the flu. Flu shots are now available in Barnard's Primary Care Health Service (Lower Level Brooks), by appointment anytime and on a walk-in basis from 9am-11:30am Monday through Thursday and 9am-4pm Friday. Please call Primary Care (212-854-2091) for more info.
Flu shots are $15 for students without Aetna Student Health Insurance, payable by check or credit/debit card. Please note: you must remain in the PCHS for 15 minutes following any vaccination.
To learn more about flu vaccination please visit the NYC Department of Health Influenza Information page, and the CDC's flu vaccination myths and facts page.
Take everyday precautions to prevent transmission.
-Wash your hands! Often, with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice), especially after sneezing or coughing. If you can’t get to a sink, clean hands with a hand sanitizer that’s at least 60% alcohol-based.
-Try to stay at least 3 feet from anyone who is sick
-Cover your cough/sneeze with your elbow or a tissue.
-Do your best to stay healthy—Get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water, manage your stress and eat nutritious food. And if you do get sick…stay home
Create a flu kit, just in case. Include:
- Digital Thermometer
- Acetaminophen or ibuprofen
- Cough medicine
- Throat Lozenges
