The Provost and the Dean of the Faculty, Linda A. Bell, is the College's chief academic officer and carries out responsibilities central to the performance of the College's educational mission. The Provost is responsible for the development and administration of all instructional programs, academic activities and policies of the College. The Office of the Provost oversees forty academic departments and programs, the Barnard Library and Academic Information Services, and the Barnard Center for Research on Women. The Provost recommends to the President all nominations for appointment to the Faculty, and develops and implements the academic budget. The Provost is also the academic liaison with appropriate counterparts at Columbia University, and oversees and implements policies and programs related to faculty and curricular support.
The Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty is committed to providing administrative leadership and support for the academic programs of Barnard College and to ensuring that the liberal arts education offered to its undergraduates meets the highest standards of quality. To these ends, members of the Provost's Office enable the Barnard faculty to excel in teaching and scholarship, and facilitate the work of the faculty in service and governance.
