I am very pleased to announce a new appointment to the Office of the Provost, someone who already enjoys wide respect among faculty, staff and students for work done in her previous role as First-Year Class Dean and now in her current position as Dean for Study Abroad. Starting July 1, 2008, Hilary Lieberman Link will become Assistant Provost and Dean for International Programs, bringing to the Provost's Office her expertise in international education and program development (to say nothing of her love for Italian literature). I am very excited about this opportunity to capitalize on Hilary's history of successes here at Barnard, and I am grateful to Deans Dorothy Denburg and Karen Blank for their support as we conceived of and implemented this change.
This new position will encompass several of the responsibilities previously assigned to Associate Provost Flora Davidson, who is returning to the faculty in Political Science and Urban Studies. The advising of individual students for Study Abroad will remain based in the Dean of Studies Office, as Dean Link takes over broader institutional responsibility for international and other academic programs.
As Assistant Provost and Dean for International Programs, her mandate includes the coordination, development and assessment of programs that enhance the global educational and research experiences for Barnard students and faculty; the development of cooperative programs with international universities to promote the enrollment of visiting students from abroad; representing the Provost on international planning efforts; serving as the primary contact for academic departments for searches and line allocation in connection with her role as Secretary to the Faculty Budget and Planning Committee; working with others in the Provost's Office to ensure that planning for searches and decisions about line allocations are performed in ways that advance the College's commitment to diversifying the faculty and curriculum; developing approaches for, and coordinating activities related to, assessment of student learning at the departmental level; providing support for departments undergoing Academic Programs Reviews; and serving as Secretary to Department Chair's meetings and the Board of Trustees Committee on Educational Policy.
Prior to her joining the Dean of Studies Office in August 2002, Hilary served as Director of Scholar Programs at New York University where she identified and worked with students eligible for prestigious scholarships and fellowships. She holds a B.A. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Italian Literature from Yale University.
Please help me to welcome Hilary in this new, challenging, promising role. And to thank her for the outstanding record of achievements in the Dean of Studies Office.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth S. Boylan, Provost and Dean of the Faculty
