WORKSHOPS SUMMARIES


1. Building Musical Intuitions: Teaching Music Theory at a Liberal Arts College
Location: Scripps and Pomona Colleges, La Jolla and Claremont, CA        Date: 2 days, TBD
The workshop is focused on discussing the challenges and issues that surround teaching music at liberal arts colleges. These challenges include: students at liberal arts colleges who are not as prepared with a depth of musical experience as their peers who enter conservatories, and a music curriculum that focuses less on the theory that is needed to accurately prepare for graduate studies. The goal is for the workshop to result in pedagogical innovations and open a network of dialogue between the participants, which will continue after the workshop has ended.

2. Media Studies in the Liberal Arts
Location: Pomona College, Claremont, CA                                      Date: 2 days, Fall/Winter 2008-09
The workshop explores the role of media studies in small liberal arts colleges, particularly the transformation of the field with the dominance of digital media. Participants will look for pedagogical opportunities and opportunities for long-term collaboration, focus on shifting curricular engagements and institutional settings, learning about new technologies, and the shift of media studies from interdisciplinary to a disciplinary. A desired goal will be the creation of a digital resource for media pedagogy in liberal arts colleges.

3. The New (Digital) Archivalism, the Humanities, and the Liberal Arts Classroom
Location: Haverford College, Haverford, PA                                    Date: 2 days, March 2009
This workshop focuses on discussing the challenges and possibilities of bringing new archival resources and research technologies to liberal arts college undergraduates. Participants will look at the increasing use of digital archives in the classroom, strive to understand their potential effects on liberal arts institutions and how Humanities is defined, and connect scholars involved in similar new archival ventures at a variety of liberal arts colleges.

4. Evaluating Teaching and Learning at Liberal Arts College: New Insights from Institutional Data
Location: Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA                                       Date: 1 day, Fall 2008
This workshop pulls together economics faculty, institutional researchers, and researcher in the field of economics and education at liberal arts colleges. The themes that will be addressed include: What is “good” teaching and how can it be measured reliably and validly? How is student learning influenced by factors outside the classroom? And, do college policies have their anticipated impacts on teaching and learning?

5. Sharing and Disseminating Innovative Approaches to Teaching Neuroscience in a Liberal Arts College
Location: Macalester College, St. Paul, MN                                      Date: July 17-18, 2008
This workshop focuses on faculty development, specifically in new and creative ways to approach neuroscience in the classrooms and reaching more broadly across the institution to forge ties with faculty in other disciplines. It will highlight faculty-designed laboratory exercises that are done in an innovative manner. These informative sessions will be posted on the website Mellon NERD (Mellon Neuroscience Education and Research Directory).

6. Middle East Studies and the Liberal Arts Workshop
Location: Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA                                            Date: 3 days, Fall 2008
This workshop provides a forum in which faculty can discuss the goals, challenges, and especially the practical strategies of establishing an effective program in Middle East Studies in the small liberal arts college context. Topics discussed will include but not be limited to curricular development, creating interdisciplinary courses and programs, the relationship between and approaches to teaching Islamic and Jewish Studies, the role of faculty, study tours and student exchanges, and challenges in hiring new faculty.

7. Student/Faculty Research Models in Computational Biology
Location: Reed College, Portland. OR                                               Date: 3 days, Summer 2008
This workshop will explore models for student/faculty research collaborations in computational biology at liberal arts colleges. Each participant will represent a distinct faculty/student research model, and come prepared with a short report on their model. The workshop will foster the exchange of these innovative models and the reports will be used to evaluate current programs, identify unrealized college assets and direct future development.

8. Africana/Diaspora Studies in the 21st Century: Building Community through a Northeast Consortium
Location: Barnard College, New York, NY                                         Date: 1 day, TBD
This workshop provides faculty opportunities to discuss the implications of recent shifts in Africana/Diaspora Studies. Participants will workshop syllabi, share resources, and begin plans for a consortium based on an ongoing digital collaboration between programs, students, and scholars. Some of the topics that will be discussed are introductory syllabi, online consortium, and how technologies might enable diaspora-wide conversations amongst students and faculty. 

9. The Future of Black/Africana Studies at Liberal Arts College
Location: Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA                              Date: 2 days, Fall-Spring 2008-09
Participants of this workshop will focus on institutional challenges that face Black and Africana studies as small liberal arts colleges. This will include studying alternative pedagogical and administrative alternatives and developing effective strategies for best meeting the needs of students in the future. Topics discussed include but are not limited to: How do we best expand our programs given our constringed faculty, thin resources and limited course relief? How do we best address a growing interest, among both scholars and students? And, how do we best share our resources among liberal arts colleges to develop collaborative pedagogical and research initiatives?
