Elizabeth S. Boylan was named Barnard's Provost and Dean of the Faculty in July 1995, and served as Acting President in Fall 2000. She also holds the rank of professor of biological sciences with tenure. Provost Boylan has been involved recently in the design and programming for Barnard's newest campus building, the Diana Center, which houses studios and offices for Architecture, Art History, and Visual Arts; the Library's main reading room and computer center; a black box theatre; classrooms; and space for student activities, retail dining and special events. She is currently the principal investigator on a $12 million challenge grant from the Mellon Foundation’s Centers of Excellence program that is funding a combination of renovations and program enhancements for the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Environmental Science. Earlier she coordinated the planning and implementation of an $8+ million renovation of the science facilities in Milbank and Altschul Halls, and led the first systematic review of the College's general education requirements since the early 1980's, resulting in the adoption of new curricular requirements for students entering in Fall 2000. Provost Boylan has also been involved in various faculty development and leadership development projects, both at Barnard and through organizations and foundations such as the American Council on Education (ACE), Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) and the Mellon Foundation. She currently is a member of the Leadership Network for International Education at ACE and the PKAL Advisory Board at the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
A specialist in developmental biology and cancer research, Provost Boylan earned a Ph.D. in zoology from Cornell University and a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from Wellesley College. She came to Barnard from Queens College/CUNY where she was associate provost for academic planning and programs. While at Queens, she held a joint appointment at the Graduate School of the City University of New York and was involved with University-wide efforts in program reform in science, engineering, technology and mathematics, and in secondary education. She holds a U.S. patent and has been a consultant for, among others, the National Cancer Institute, the National Science Foundation and the American Cancer Society. From 1999 through 2004 she served as Commissioner on the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Janet Jakobsen, Dean for Faculty Diversity and Development

Dean Jakobsen leads efforts to cultivate effective faculty pipelines to attract and retain a diverse faculty, working with departments that are doing searches and helping to provide mentoring for junior faculty through to tenure. She also oversees the programs that our office sponsors for junior faculty, such as New Faculty Orientation, and ascertains what else we should be doing in the way of "best practices." Dean Jakobsen brings to this position her work as the Principal Investigator for the Ford Difficult Dialogues Initiative as well as her service as the Director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College, her M.A. from the School of Theology at Claremont, and earned her Ph.D. in Ethics and Society from Emory University. She joined the Provost's Office in July 2008
Hilary Lieberman Link, Associate Provost and Dean for International Programs

Hilary Lieberman Link was appointed Assistant Provost and Dean for International Programs in July 2008. Assistant Provost Link coordinates, develops and assesses programs that enhance the global educational and research experiences for Barnard students and faculty. She represents the Provost on international planning efforts, including establishing partnerships with educational institutions abroad, and serves as the Provost's liaison with joint Barnard-Columbia Study Abroad programs. Assistant Provost Link is the Secretary to the Faculty Budget and Planning Committee; and she works with departments and programs on academic program reviews and plans for the assessment of student learning goals. She also advises first-year, sophomore and transfer students.
She first joined Barnard in August 2002 in the Dean of Studies Office as First-Year Class Dean, and in October 2006 she became the Dean for Study Abroad. Prior to Barnard, she served as Director of Scholar Programs at New York University. Link holds a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Italian Language and Literature from Yale University.
Angela Haddad, Associate Provost

Assistant Provost Angela Haddad provides administrative leadership of the Barnard curriculum, foundation grants, faculty governance, and academic assessment practices and planning. In this capacity, she chairs the Committee on Instruction, which includes regular review and implementation of the college’s general education requirements, and serves as the Provost’s representative on the Columbia College Committee on Instruction. Assistant Provost Haddad also serves as the Provost's designee to the Faculty Governance and Procedures Committee, and chairs the Faculty Grants Committee. Working with the Provost and the Director of Institutional Support, she initiates and supervises projects that support faculty development and curricular innovation. Assistant Provost Haddad also supervises the Provost's Office publications, and shares responsibility for academic and institutional assessment planning. Haddad was appointed to her position in August of 2009. Prior to Barnard, she was Chair and Associate Professor of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Central Michigan University. She earned a B.A. from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and a Ph.D., in sociology from the University of Michigan.
Gretchen Young, Dean for Study Abroad

Dean Young came to Barnard in 2008 and moved from the Office of the Dean of Studies to the Provost’s Office in 2009. As Dean for Study Abroad she advises students as they determine whether, where and how they should study abroad. She helps students to incorporate their study abroad experience into their overall Barnard education – both practically and theoretically. She also advises first-year, sophomore and visiting international students. Dean Young earned her BA in International Politics and Economics and an MA in French, both from Middlebury College. She spent her own junior year of undergraduate studies in France studying at Reid Hall, the University of Paris X at Nanterre and L'Institut d'Etudes Politiques. Dean Young has spent 8 years living and working in Africa. She has traveled extensively around that continent and the world. Dean Young began her international career as a Teacher Trainer for the Peace Corps in Madagascar. She was later named Country Director of the School for International Training’s study abroad programs in Madagascar, Senegal and South Africa. She came to us from the University of Connecticut’s Office of Study Abroad.

Gwen Williams, a member of the Provost’s Office since 1981, provides budgetary and financial oversight support to the Provost. She coordinates the budget process for the academic departments, working closely with the Budget Director and the Controller’s Office. As the Human Resources liaison for the faculty she has responsibility for payroll, appointments, leaves and visas, and serves as the alternate responsible officer for the West Side Educational Consortium of New York J-1 Exchange visitor program. Ms. Williams also manages the faculty election process and grant funds for research and travel.

Robin Beltzer supervises and coordinates the work of the staff in the Provost’s Office and oversees the administrative support for the faculty and academic departments and programs. She is responsible for the hiring, supervision and development of many faculty department and program assistants and manages the process involved in the preparation of tenure cases, faculty reviews and promotions. Ms. Beltzer, who joined the Provost’s Office in 2002, also coordinates the preparation of faculty offices and serves as the Provost’s representative in matters related to faculty housing, several college-wide committees, and a variety of other special projects.

Anja Santiago is responsible for the publications and analytical reports that are generated by the Provost’s Office. She serves as the editor of the online course catalogue, the faculty newsletter and the Provost’s website. Ms. Santiago, who joined the Provost’s Office in 2006, also supports the curriculum by working closely with Assistant Provost Haddad and the Committee on Instruction. Additional responsibilities include supporting the Grants and Internationalization committees, coordinating new faculty orientation and providing support for academic program reviews.
Courtney Weber, Executive Assistant to the Provost

Courtney Weber facilitates all communication to and from the Provost’s Office and is the first point of contact for many. She is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Provost, which include managing the Provost’s calendar, correspondence and travel arrangements. She also serves as the primary administrative support to the committees and meetings sponsored by the Provost. Ms. Weber has been a member of the Provost’s Office since 2006.
Laura Paine, International Programs Assistant

Laura Paine joined the International Programs office within the Office of the Provost in July 2010. Laura supports the Associate Provost/Dean for International Programs, and the Dean for Study Abroad, as well as provides general support to the Provost's Office. She is the first point of contact for all student, parent and program communication regarding study abroad, handles scheduling and communication for the Associate Provost and the Dean for Study Abroad, and is involved in all day-to-day operations of the International Programs area. |
