Elizabeth
S. Boylan, Provost

Elizabeth S. Boylan was named Barnard's Provost
and Dean of the Faculty in July 1995, and served
as Acting President in Fall 2000. She also holds
the rank of professor of biological sciences
with tenure. Provost Boylan has been involved
recently in the design and programming for
Barnard's new
campus building, the Nexus, which
will house a distinctive combination of academic
departments and programs,
the Library's main
reading room and computer center, a black box
theatre, classrooms, and space for student
activities, retail dining and special events.
Earlier she coordinated the planning and
implementation of an
$8+ million renovation of
the science facilities in Milbank and Altschul
Halls and led the first systematic review of the
College's general education requirements since
the early 1980's, resulting in the adoption of
new curricular requirements for students
entering in fall 2000. Provost Boylan has also
been involved in various faculty development and
leadership development projects, both at Barnard
and through organizations and foundations such
as the American Council on Education, Project
Kaleidoscope and the Mellon Foundation.
A specialist in developmental biology and cancer
research, Provost Boylan earned a Ph.D. in
zoology from Cornell University and a bachelor's
degree in biological sciences from Wellesley
College. She came to Barnard from Queens
College/CUNY where she was associate provost for
academic planning and programs. While at Queens,
she held a joint appointment at the Graduate
School of the City University of New York and
was involved with University-wide efforts in
program reform in science, engineering,
technology and mathematics, and in secondary
education. She holds a U.S. patent and has been
a consultant for, among others, the National
Cancer Institute, the National Science
Foundation and the American Cancer Society. From
1999 through 2004 she served as Commissioner on
the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Janet Jakobsen, Interim Associate Dean for Faculty Diversity

Dean Jakobsen will lead efforts to cultivate effective faculty pipelines to further diversify the Barnard faculty and develop “best practice” documents to assist departments in implementing inclusive faculty recruitment activities. She will assist the Provost in analyzing options for the future with regard to leadership of these efforts. Dean Jakobsen brings to this position her work as the Principal Investigator for the Ford Difficult Dialogues Initiative as well as her service as the Director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College, her M.A. from the School of Theology at Claremont, and earned her Ph.D. in Ethics and Society from Emory University. She joined the Provost’s Office in July 2008 |
Laura Kay, Interim Associate Dean for Curriculum and Governance

Dean Kay’s responsibilities include chairing the Committee on Instruction as it continues its review of the General Education Requirements and prepares for the upcoming Middle States accreditation review. She also serves as ex officio convener for the Faculty Governance & Procedures Committee. A Professor of Physics and Astronomy, she is also the Department Chair of Women’s Studies. Dean Kay received her B.S. in Physics and A.B. in Feminist Studies from Stanford University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She joined the Provost’s Office in July 2008. |
Stephanie Pfirman, Interim Associate Dean for Grant Support and Interdisciplinary Initiatives

Dean Pfirman chairs the Faculty Grants Committee, works closely with the Provost and the Office of Institutional Support to expand funding opportunities for curricular and faculty development efforts, and serves as the Provost’s representative to the BLAIS committee. She also supports interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to the curriculum and research areas. Dean Pfirman is also Professor and Department Chair of Environmental Science. She received her B.A. from Colgate University and her Ph.D. in Marine Geology and Geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She joined the Provost’s Office in July 2008. |
Hilary Lieberman Link,Assistant Provost and Dean for International Programs

Assistant Provost Link coordinates, develops and assesses programs that enhance the global educational and research experiences for Barnard students and faculty. She represents the Provost on international planning efforts, including establishing partnerships with educational institutions abroad, and serves as the Provost’s liaison with joint Barnard-Columbia Study Abroad programs. Assistant Provost Link is the Secretary to the Faculty Budget and Planning Committee; serves as Secretary to Department Chair's meetings; serves as the Provost’s representative on the Columbia College Committee on Instruction; and works with departments and programs on academic program reviews and plans for the assessment of student learning goals. She also advises first-year, sophomore and transfer students.
Hilary Lieberman Link was appointed Assistant Provost and Dean for International Programs in July 2008. She first joined Barnard in August 2002 in the Dean of Studies Office as First-Year Class Dean, and in October 2006 she became the Dean for Study Abroad. Prior to Barnard, she served as Director of Scholar Programs at New York University. She holds a B.A. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Italian Language and Literature from Yale University. |

Gwen Williams, a member of the Provost’s Office since 1981, provides budgetary and financial oversight support to the Provost. She coordinates the budget process for the academic departments, working closely with the Budget Director and the Controller’s Office. As the Human Resources liaison for the faculty she has responsibility for payroll, appointments, leaves and visas, and serves as the alternate responsible officer for the West Side Educational Consortium of New York J-1 Exchange visitor program. Ms. Williams also manages the faculty election process and grant funds for research and travel. |

Robin Beltzer supervises and coordinates the work of the staff in the Provost’s Office and oversees the administrative support for the faculty and academic departments and programs. She is responsible for the hiring, supervision and development of many faculty department and program assistants and manages the process involved in the preparation of tenure cases, faculty reviews and promotions. Ms. Beltzer, who joined the Provost’s Office in 2002, also coordinates the preparation of faculty offices and serves as the Provost’s representative in matters related to faculty housing, several college-wide committees, and a variety of other special projects.

Anja Santiago is responsible for the publications and analytical reports that are generated by the Provost’s Office. She serves as the editor of the online course catalogue, the faculty newsletter and the Provost’s website. Ms. Santiago, who joined the Provost’s Office in 2006, also supports the curriculum by working closely with Dean Kay and the Committee on Instruction. Additional responsibilities include supporting the Grants and Internationalization committees, coordinating new faculty orientation and providing support for academic program reviews.

Courtney Weber facilities all communication to and from the Provost’s Office and is the first point of contact for many. She is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Provost, which include managing the Provost’s calendar, correspondence and travel arrangements. She also serves as the primary administrative support to the committees and meetings sponsored by the Provost. Ms. Weber has been a member of the Provost’s Office since 2006. |
