January 2008

To: All Barnard students

From: Constance A. Brown, Registrar

Subject: Online Registration and Program Filing, Spring 2008

The dates for online REGISTRATION are January 18-23, around the clock. If you are unable to complete registration by January 23, you must come in person to the Registrar’s Office, 107 Milbank; there will be a (progressive) late fee after January 23.

You must register through eBear For eBear, you need a valid Barnard email login and password. If you do not know your Barnard email password, consult the Help Desk on the first floor of the Barnard Library (bring your Barnard ID).

You must register from a computer on the Barnard or Columbia campus. Registration is the means by which you verify that you are enrolled at the college and that you have cleared any holds, and you must be on Morningside Heights to confirm your presence.

To register:

Log in to eBear. Until you have registered, a screen reminding you to do so will be the first page you see.

In eBear, select the blue Registration tab at the top (if it is not already selected).

Click on the green Registration on the navy blue title bar below the tabs.

Click on the green Registration on the left. (You will be informed if you have holds that prevent you from registering. Click on the green Registration Holds on the left to see what holds you need to clear and where to go to clear them.)

You will see a new screen, welcoming you to Online Registration. Click on the button at the bottom to begin registering. Use the buttons at the bottom of subsequent screens to move from form to form, until you finish registering. The last screen will tell you that you have completed the process.

REGISTRATION is not the same as PROGRAM FILING. The deadline for filing your program, which must be entered online and approved online by your adviser, is 4:30 pm on Friday, February 1. Read on for important information about program-filing.

Whether or not you have registered on time, you must FILE A PROGRAM BY February 1. You may begin entering/changing courses on eBear on January 15.

Here is what you need to know for PROGRAM FILING:

Signing up for ‘L’ courses

L signup will be, as usual, in person at the Registrar’s Office. The schedule for L signup is:

Friday, January 18 10 am – 3 pm

Tuesday, January 22 10 am – 4 pm
Wednesday, January 23 10 am – 4 pm
Thursday, January 24 8 am – 2 pm
Friday, January 25 10 am – 4 pm

Monday through Friday, Jan. 28-Feb. 1 10 am – 4 pm

Note: There is a separate procedure for L signup for SENIORS.

What deadlines and penalties apply?

A student who files a program after February 1 will be subject to a progressive late fee (the amount increases each week, peaking at $250).

Courses entered but not approved by your adviser are not valid. If your adviser has not approved, you have not filed a program. See your adviser!

Where is the Directory of Classes?

The online directory is at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/

What is the schedule for language placement exams?

Barnard exams in French (405 Milbank) and German (324 Milbank) will be given Friday, January 18, 10 am to noon. For other languages, see the list on our website. The Barnard Spanish placement exam is on eBear.

Which adviser should approve a program?

DOUBLE MAJORS: Both advisers must approve your program online.

MAJORS WITH COLUMBIA ADVISERS: Columbia advisers can approve programs online through eBear. Every Computer Science and Statistics major should obtain online approval from her adviser and from her Barnard class dean.

When does a student need her Class Dean’s approval?

— Students are expected to file full-time programs. To file a part-time program (under 12 points), you must have a compelling reason and your Class Dean’s approval.

— Any student wishing to take over 18 points must have her Class Dean’s approval. If a student files for over 18 points without that approval, the last course/s on the program will be deleted.

Which Barnard courses need special procedures?

Physical Education. The PE lottery will take place on eBear January 23-25. Results will be posted after 5pm on January 25. You must put PE on your online program.

Music BC1502 (voice). Auditions for any available spaces will take place on Wednesday, January 23, starting at 6 pm, in 325 Milbank. You must be able to teach yourself a song from a printed score.

Independent study. You must file a form at the Registrar’s Office, by the program filing deadline, for consideration by the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing.

What should students do about ‘L’ courses?

Barnard students may sign up for limited-enrollment Columbia (and some Barnard) courses (with "maximum enrollment" listed in the online pencil book) January 18-February 1. Barnard students wishing to sign up for "L" courses must do so at the Barnard Registrar's Office, 107 Milbank, January 18-February 1. (See beginning of this memo for exact hours.)

If an "L" course also specifies DEP or INS, you must first secure departmental or instructor permission and then come to 107 Milbank to be enrolled in the Columbia computer system.

If you put an "L" course on your online program and have not followed this procedure, the course will not have a green check online and will not be on your actual program.

Regardless of what the instructor or department may tell you, if the course has an "L" in the pencil book or appears with an L reminder on your online program, you must sign up at 107 Milbank.

SENIORS ONLY will follow a different procedure for L signup.

What other courses require special procedures?

SIPA courses. Barnard students may take SIPA courses only with Dean Runsdorf’s approval.

Graduate Business School courses, 6000 and above, prefixed B, open only to qualified seniors with a B average; file a cross-registration form with Dean Schneider.

Journalism School courses, prefixed J, are open only to seniors. Consult Dean Schneider.

Teachers College Courses: Permission is needed to take a course at Teachers College. Secure an application from the Registrar's Office, obtain the proper signatures, and return the completed form to the Dean of Studies. TC courses require the payment of additional tuition at the Teachers College rate of $1,030 per point, over and above Barnard tuition.

Jewish Theological Seminary Courses: For courses not on the approved list (see Dean Link), approvals of the corresponding department chair and your adviser are required on a form available at the Registrar's Office. These courses are not entered on your Barnard program.

Columbia Physical Education. You may sign up for Columbia PE as an L course starting Thursday, January 24.

Music lessons at Columbia, Manhattan School of Music, or Juilliard. For Columbia, go to Dodge Hall. Students taking lessons at MSM or Juilliard must file an approval form every semester.

No students may enroll in Columbia core courses (Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization) except those continuing enrollment from fall 2007.

What courses cannot be taken by Barnard students?

Film courses not listed in the Columbia College Catalogue.

— Professional-school courses and graduate courses at the 6000 level and higher. (Students may take advanced graduate courses with the approval of instructor and adviser. See above for information about some professional-school courses.)

—Business W3001 (Intro Finance) is the only undergraduate business course approved for credit. Barnard students may not take W3020/3021 (Introduction to Marketing) or any of the Business K courses. Students interested in Corporate Finance should consider ECON W4280.

What other limits and restrictions do students need to know?

Two-point courses do not fulfill minor or general education requirements but may be used as electives. In special instances, e.g., Art History (Visual Arts), a two-point course may fulfill a major requirement.

Variable-point courses. If you should receive more than the lowest number of points, come to the Registrar’s Office and fill out a form.

Studio credit. Be sure not to exceed the limit of four visual arts courses, six dance technique courses, and six courses in vocal or instrumental instruction. Majors in these areas are allowed additional courses for credit. See the online Catalogue for the full policy.

Dance technique courses. Students who entered in or after fall 2003 may receive 1 point for PE or dance, in different semesters, for a maximum of 2 points (1 point for students who entered as transfers), and may later receive additional credit for dance technique. If you think you are entitled to a point of credit for dance, come to the Registrar’s Office when you are ready to file your final program, and fill out a form.

ASTR C1404-01, Professor Applegate’s section, does not satisfy Barnard’s quantitative reasoning requirement.

Reminders:

No time overlap between courses is allowed. (The computer will not allow you to enter two courses that overlap. You are allowed to take a course that ends at, for example, 6 pm, and another course that begins at 6 pm, but you will have to come to this office to have us enter the second course on your program.)

—There is no refund for courses dropped after February 1.
