Weather Update

Due to the storm, Barnard College closed at 4pm Friday, for non-essential personnel. “Essential personnel" include staff in Facilities, Public Safety and Residence Halls.  

Friday evening and weekend classes are cancelled but events are going forward as planned unless otherwise noted. The Athena Film Festival programs are also scheduled to go forward as planned but please check http://athenafilmfestival.com/ for the latest information. 

The Barnard Library and Archives closed at 4pm Friday and will remain closed on Saturday, Feb. 9.  The Library will resume regular hours on Sunday opening at 10am.  

Please be advised that due to the conditions, certain entrances to campus may be closed.  The main gate at 117th Street & Broadway will remain open.  For further updates on college operations, please check this website, call the College Emergency Information Line 212-854-1002 or check AM radio station 1010WINS.

Prohibited Items

The following items are prohibited in all Barnard owned and operated residence halls.  Items will be confiscated and not returned to students if found. 

  • Air conditioners (both window and portable units)
  • Yellow / Blue "sticky stuff" or double-sided tape for hanging posters (you may only use blue painter's tape)
  • "Removable" wallpaper or wall decals (they do not remove as easy as promised and damage the paint on the wall)
  • Pets (only fish in a 5 gallon or less tank are allowed)
  • Candles
  • Extra furniture
  • Halogen lamps
  • Hot plate, open coil heaters, toaster, or toaster oven
  • Deep fryers
  • Rice cookers
  • Space heaters
  • Extension cords (only surge protectors are allowed, example)
  • Water beds
  • Hookahs
  • Illegal drugs and/or paraphernalia
  • Weapons (including decorative swords, knives, etc)

The following items are only allowed in Suite style kitchens and may not be used in bedrooms or in the Quad kitchenettes:

  • George Forman-style grills or panini makers
  • Microwaves
  • Crockpots
  • other cooking applicances 

IMPORTANT NOTE: we have received a report that the lighting appliance pictured and described here is prone to melting. We strongly recommend against the use of this product on our campus.
