It's an Email Hoedown!

Love Your Computer Week is in full swing! As you may have noticed, Academic Technologies has been tabling in McIntosh for the second annual Love Your Computer Week. This year, we are focusing on all aspects of email management.

The Residential Computing Assistants that you're used to finding in our labs during Office Hours will be answering questions about email clients, customizing Webmail, using Pine, SFTP and SSH, spam filters, phishing, email quotas and account size, email forwarding, "vacation messages," and anything else you can think of. For instance, if you've ever been curious about what's inside your computer, we also have a desktop computer opened up with all of its parts labeled.

Last semester, the Barnard Eclipse server switched to only accepting secure protocols (which you may have read about in an earlier Digital Divas column!). We have more information about email security, both at Barnard and on commercial servers.

During Komputerfest in October, Academic Technologies brought a security engraving service to Barnard's campus. You can get any of your electronics (including laptops, iPods, and PDAs) engraved with a security code linked to a New York City Police Department database, so that recovery of your lost or stolen electronics is more likely. We're planning on having them back for Love Your Computer week, so look for more information at our table in McIntosh.

And if you're still using Webmail to check your Barnard email, we have a number of computers running both Windows XP and Macintosh OS X demoing all of the options for checking your Barnard email -- from Pine to Outlook Express. If you have questions about which email client is right for you, or the difference between POP and IMAP, or why you would ever bother with an email client at all, you'll find the answers at Love Your Computer Week!
